Thursday Throwback: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by CCR

I must admit, I was quite surprised by the DLC we got this week. I was almost certain that the huge 12-pack released in mid 2010 would have been it for the band, but I’m glad I was wrong. In honor of the Creedence Clearwater Revival 3-pack released this week, I thought I would once again pull one of the tracks from their massive 12 pack (we have already featured Bad Moon Rising). It was a tough choice, but I’ve decided to feature I Heard It Through the Grapevine as this week’s Thursday Throwback pick.
Those of you who love your southern rock will love this band. Despite the fact that they originally hailed from California, they are still held in high esteem as pioneering purveyors of the southern rock genre, considering they have sold over 26 million records in the US alone. Noted by Rolling Stone magazine as the 82nd “Greatest Artist of All Time,” they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, officially cementing their iconic status.
I nearly passed on choosing this tune, until I noticed the running time. The song clocks in at approximately ten minutes and twelve seconds, which makes it longer than some of the other southern rock epic Rock Band tracks Green Grass and High Tides (9:44) and Free Bird (9:34)! The 4-tier guitar is certainly the best out of the instruments, with a mini-solo at around the 3-minute mark, and a gigantic second solo, which lasts for the whole second half the song! The 4-tier bass will keep you on your toes too, as the chart very rarely sits still, and includes quite a bit of variation. The 4-tier drums are great to play on both normal and Pro modes, with a healthy mix of nearly everything throughout the song. The 3-tier vocals is classic CCR John Fogerty vocals, which nearly everyone can sing along to.
