Queen in Lego: Rock Band, Possible Queen: Rock Band?

Brian May of Queen

From a BBC article:

May also said he was delighted that he was being portrayed as a figure in a Lego Rock Band game – due out next month.  “It’s the ultimate accolade, to be portayed in Lego,” he said. “My dreams are all fulfilled now.”

He also went on to comment about a possible Queen version of Rock Band (a la the Beatles):

And he said there was talk “going on behind the scenes” about a dedicated Queen Rock Band game – like The Beatles version that came out last month.  “Yes we’re into it, I think it may happen,” he said.

I have my doubts about this one. Not that they wouldn’t deserve it. I mean, Queen is a serious force in the history of rock, but the Queen DLC pack coming next week and the two Queen songs coming in Lego: Rock Band have almost all of their big hits (I know everyone, with the obvious exception of Bohemian Rhapsody). You can make a Queen: Rock Band game similar to the Beatles: Rock Band game, but without the big hits on it, I just don’t think it would sell nearly as many units, unless you include the hits on it too, at which point you’re potentially making people buy the songs twice.

What say you?

  • Agreed with your second point on a dedicated game. Adding a bunch of content now and re-selling it again later is problematic for the market, given the usual high standards for HMX releases. I fear that a Queen-only game would turn out like Metallica’s GH effort, where a bunch of “Queen-inspired” songs worm their way in.

What COULD sell is a Queen disc collecting LRB + Oct DLC (+ future DLC) tracks with updated outfits or Wii/Xbox/PS3 characters. Some folks would re-spend the $ for that.

If they gave it a treatment that was half as potent as Beatles Rock Band, I think a Queen RB could be okay. They’d need to invest time on the models and find something they can pull off similar to the dreamscapes, which I think would really add to it.

Though, you do make a point that all their best hits are now encompassed in next week’s DLC and LRB.

I kind of like the idea of having characters and clothing DLC for RB instead – maybe even some stages and such. The Queen Experience DLC pack could be neat.

  • Greg Demetrick says:

Given the lack-luster sales of SingStar Queen outside the UK I would say Sony would be hard pressed to justify the expense of Queen:Rock Band. Also, given the DLC and Lego inclusions the idea merits less and less possibilities.

I like the idea presented here of treating Rock Band Updates like Little Big Planet Updates. You should be able to add characters the same way you do DLC for a full experience. It may not be custom like Beatles:Rock Band but could get you most of the way there.

All very good points. I could possibly see an “AC/DC” type pack but with Queen characters instead of generic quickplay characters, but the songs would have to be deeper cuts, as most of the hits are already released. Anything’s possible, I guess.

I expect a Rock Band: Pink Floyd well before a Queen stand-alone. At least Floyd has a good deal of visual imagery to pull from. Plus, as you mentioned, a good bit of the Queen’s popular tracks will have been available in the Rock Band format for quite a while before they could get full stand-alone game in the hands of fans.

  • Francesco Poli says:

Eeeeh no. Track packs OK, maybe with Queen avatars on stage, at least in the ‘pack itself, but a whole full game? Not right now, nor a year from now at the very least. If they find some brand-new way of letting us experience even the same songs, a way that goes beyond just about any gameplay gimmick or visual treatment that’s been thought of so far… maybe.
I’d actually expect nothing less from Harmonix, so we’ll see. Worst case scenario, it’s a few more DLC packs so players should win whatever happens.

  • Queen has a few famous concerts/live albums that can be recreated like the AC/DC pack. Unless Harmonix gets a big name band with little to no DLC (Zepplin?, the Stones?) there’s not a single bad I can think of that deserves the Rockband: the Bealtes treatment.

Now, the debate between DLC vs. Track Packs, I think DLC is better as I’m not a fiend for gamerscore and I can pick and choose.

  • Steven R says:

The thing is, even with all their best-known songs available in the upcoming track pack…their best songs are still not the ones played on the radio. Case and point: Dead on Time.
