Rock Band 3 to Utilize iZotope Vocal Technology

With all the features being added to Rock Band 3, I think the vocals have been overlooked with all the excitement. Well now all the vocalists out there can get excited. Harmonix has entered into a technology licensing agreement with iZotope, Inc., a research-driven audio signal processing company, to allow players to take their vocal performance to new heights.

Using iZotope’s real-time pitch detection and pitch shifting middleware, Rock Band 3 provides players with the option to enable vocal effects commonly used in the music industry, assisting players to sing on key more easily with pitch correction and bringing the tools that pros use into the living room.

“The ability to have pitch correction in real-time helps to enhance the vocal gameplay and players’ in-game performance in Rock Band,” said Eran Egozy, CTO and co-founder of Harmonix. “We’re excited to feature iZotope’s technology and this new middleware in Rock Band 3 so that our players can enjoy the type of vocal effects that professional rock stars utilize for live stage performances in their homes this holiday.”

“With the production values of video games rivaling that of commercial albums and blockbuster films, consumers expect the same caliber of video and audio quality during dynamic, real-time game play,” explains Mark Ethier, CEO of iZotope. “Rock Band is an ideal platform for us to showcase iZotope’s technology so we can provide gamers with studio-grade audio effects that professional mixers, sound designers and others in the entertainment industry have relied on for years.”

You’ve Got Flute in My Rock Band

I noticed this bouncing around the blogosphere this morning, and initally didn’t think much of it.  Anyone who’s been around the block and played vocals a few times in Rock Band knows that singing isn’t required… you can hum your way through the songs and do pretty well.  However this woman decided to test out the alternative vocal theory by playing her flute to the vocals of Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold.  Sound wise it’s alright… not a big fan of hearing a flute and Avenged Sevenfold together… I mean, this isn’t Jethro Tull (sorry Mr. Anderson).  But how effective is playing your flute into the mic?  See for yourself above, but her 98% on Expert and 5 gold stars should tell you that it works pretty damn well.

P.S. Please… no band camp references in the comments, OK?

There’s more… after the jump there’s more instrument/vocal mashup vids…

Beatles: Rock Band Vocal Harmonies Explained

Ed Sullivan

Wired was able to get a good in depth look into how the Beatles: Rock Band vocal harmonies work.  As expected, instead of just one mic, you will now be able to connect up to to three mics at a time.  These three mics still count as one player, and you’ll be able to select “solo” or “harmonies” when playing.  Solo just gives you one line to pay attention to while singing.  Harmonies give you one line for the lead singer, and two other lines for the other two singers.

The nice thing is that you technically don’t have to sing harmonies; three singers can all sing the lead vocal track, but you won’t max your score unless you do harmonize.  After the song, you’ll be able to see how the singers did together, or you can select to see additional detail which will show how all three singers did.
