Thursday Throwback: “I Want It All” by Queen

In celebration of the latest pack of Queen DLC released this week, I decided to feature another one of their songs (the first was Tie your Mother Down). The track was originally released in the first Queen Pack, and then re-released as a RB3 version a year later. The song I’ve picked is I Want It All.
With 18 number 1 albums, and just as many chart topping singles, they are one of the most successful bands ever with estimated album sales topping 300 million! In Rock Band, they now have 27 unique songs (35 different songs if you count the RB3 versions separately), and if you remember, there were even rumors at one time that a dedicated Queen: Rock Band game was in the works.
So what’s the song like to play? Well the 5-tier guitar starts off with a solo, which may throw some of you off. During the song you switch a lot between rhythm and lead guitar, to mix things up a bit. 4-tier drums is quite easy for the majority of the song, but has a few drum rolls included, as well. While not playing a lead role like in other Queen songs, the 6-tier keys has relatively simple charts for much of the song. 3-tier bass is unsurprisingly the weakest chart, but as with Queen, its never repetitive or boring. Finally, 4-tier vocals isn’t the hardest Queen song to sing, but like most of their songs, it is fun to play.
Now you may be thinking to yourself “Those tiers are way off, this song is easy!” Well wait until about 2:10 in, and you the difficulty for most of the instruments ramps up significantly, particularly with guitar and drums, and keys is absolutely crazy. A lot of people will fall over with this 30-second part of the song, which is one of the reasons why I like it.

Thursday Throwback: “Tie Your Mother Down” by Queen

Queen is one of those bands is almost universally enjoyed. Even if someone says they don’t like them, they can’t deny the fact they are one of the greatest and most popular British bands ever. Because of this, and because of the two Queen packs released last December, I thought I would look back at one of the Queen songs that was not upgraded with Rock Band 3 features.
“Tie Your Mother Down,” selected as this week’s Thursday Throwback selection, is from the album “A Day to the Races,” and has been recently remastered. The album version has a one-minute instrumental intro featuring a Shepard tone melody, which is actually a reprise of the ending of the song “Teo Torriatte,” which is the last track of the album. “Tie Your Mother Down” is the first track of the album, so it makes the album like a circle.
The track, as you can expect from Queen, is very fun to play. The main note chart for guitar can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get used to it, and along with a few fun filled solos, makes an enjoyable experience. The drums have quite a unique chart, which doesn’t seem to happen very often in Rock Band (the only other song I can think of that is like this is “Don’t Stop“ by Fleetwood Mac). With frequent breaks off the usual chart with symbol hits (similar to “Gimme Shelter“), it’s quite a good drum song, too. Bass is very much like guitar, which may be a little repetitive in places, but the note chart changes quite often, so it’s good to play. Vocals are your standard Queen vocals and very enjoyable!
Unfortunately, there is no easy full band gameplay video for me to grab on YouTube, so the playthrough videos are broken up slightly.

Also, I just want to mention that I apologize for not having fulfilled any requests yet. I haven’t had the time to buy some new tracks and play them, but I will get around to it!
