San Diego Comic-Con Harmonix Panel Video

Here it is, in case you missed it, which unless you were there, is everybody.

John Drake, Sylvain Dubrofsky, and the rest of the HMX community team started off the panel with “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears, which sounds like it was recorded underwater (a result of the recording, not the game itself).

A few things of note: We see yet another song with a Keys solo. And the in-song animations look UNBELIEVABLE. (Fractals, FTW!) Also, very funny Muse DLC acknowledgement at the beginning of the discussion, although no confirmation of DLC coming, so don’t get your hopes up. They mention here, and I’ve heard at E3, that there are some VERY thorough tutorials in Rock Band 3 for regular and Pro modes. John Drake: “We’re not setting out to teach you, we’re setting out to trick you into learning stuff by having fun.” Sylvain: “I hate the word edutainment. It’s not that.” And someone from the audience asked if lead and rhythm guitar will ever be separated. It sounds like it plausible, but didn’t sound like it will happen anytime soon.

The songs announced in the panel are available here.

And hey look, Sylvain is wearing one of the Rock Band 3 t-shirts I’m giving out this week!

I’m still not pumped about the setlist

The setlist is chosen to best play up to it’s gameplay enhancements. Songs that will be interesting and fun on Keys, as well as Pro-mode, will be favored over other songs.

Not sure how to best put this without sounding like a jerk, but I’ll try: I think Guitar Hero is doing an excellent job of playing up its strengths to its core audience at the obvious expense of the casual player, which may or may not be an issue as the casual player has been disappearing since GH3 anyway. While adding much more metal and difficult songs onto their setlist is a great way to get its core fans VERY excited, the average person (remember, think from a mainstream, not rhythm gamer, perspective) is going to look at their setlist and go “Who?” and “What song is this?” I think Rock Band 3 is going a more mainstream route with the disc to get as many units in people’s homes as possible, and then enhance it with a large variety of DLC, more so than ever before. Two completely different strategies for the two big music game franchises, which I think helps differentiate them going forward.

For once I’m actually happy about there being easy songs in a game BECAUSE they’re easy. I’ll need a lot of songs to practice pro mode with.

Well what the hell else can you call it? They are trying to get you to learn how to play a guitar. They’re including tutorials and lessons, as well as specific trainers for every song on the disc to help you with that. They flat out admit that they’re trying to “trick” you into learning by having fun. That’s the very definition of edutainment!

    RockBandAide Reply:

‘Edutainment’ has a negative and juvenile connotation to it, which is obviously not the mindset they want to communicate to potential audiences.

They gave away GDRB too? Oh man, I wish I wasn’t not there when that happened.

    Toad3000 Reply:

They did that at the Rock Band competition at Bally’s in Atlantic City, too. Unfortunately most of our band had rushed out and purchased GDRB the day it released, so only one of us got a free copy. That’s what I get for buying everything the day it releases. :-P

Rock Band 3 looks like everything I’ve hoped for since Rock Band 1.
The only thing that disappoints me is that previously purchased DLC isn’t planned to be updated with the new features… I’m still hoping that they get that straightened out.

…Rock Band 3 is still a day one purchase though. Awful setlist or not, it will show me how to play REAL guitar! :D

I’m just hoping that Snoop in DC is a sign that he’s still coming to RB.
