Rock Band 3 Song Sorting Solutions

RB DLC Poster

“Recent studies show that 1350 is more than 349.” I don’t know about the rest of you, but this gave me a chuckle the first time I saw it and has to be one of my favorite things that I saw as part of the Rock Band 3 E3 coverage. (Yes, there’s too many to list here!) With plans to have close to 2,000 songs available by the time Rock Band 3 releases, the in game music library is going to need a major make-over to help you find not only your favorite songs, but the ones you need for 3 vocalists or that support the Pro Guitar.

Crapload of DLC already!

Not to worry though, Harmonix and MTV Games has heard your pleas and made serious updates to the library to make the sorting much less painful. Though it’s still called sorting on screen it really acts as more of a filtering system. According to John Drake during the Rock Band 3 E3 Stage Demo presentation:

“This filtering system’s the only real way we have to manage all that content. We think it’s really slick and cool and you should get excited about it at home.”

Sorting Options

With Rock Band 3, you’ll be soon be able to sort your music library by:

  • Song Difficulties
  • Number of Vocal Parts
  • Song Lengths, including the fan favorite “Neverending Epic Songs”
  • Song Location
  • Song Ratings
  • Decades
  • Genres
  • Pro Guitar Support
  • Keys Support

I’m not sure how many of you saw the FULL Video of MTV Games Rock Band 3 E3 Demo, but you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already! It may be long especially for those with ADD like me, but it’s full of awesome and worth multiple views to watch the innovative new features of Rock Band 3, over and over and over again.

Not to nitpick, but to potentially avoid a rumor mill if I’m right, wasn’t it 2000 songs “by the end of the year” and not “upon RB3 release”? I wasn’t at E3, of course, but…

    Mcmax3000 Reply:

I thought it was by the launch of RB3 but I don’t really remember.

    ElektraFi Reply:

Sadly, I wasn’t there either, Sage, so I’m just going by what I saw in the vids. John does say by release though. Even with a ton of RBN songs on the way, that does sound like an awful lot of songs to still be released by then. Perhaps he was rounding up?

    Mcmax3000 Reply:

You do have to remember though, they’re already over 1,600 right now and they’re probably counting the 87 or whatever songs that will be on the RB3 disc so with a bunch of RBN content and 3-4 months of standard DLC, it’s not completely out of the question.

It will be tight. By my reckoning they would need to average about 17 tracks a week to get over the 2000 mark by launch, taking the October 31 rumour as true. It should be doable, particularly since the RBN seems to have picked up over the last couple of weeks. It will still probably take some big (in terms of number of songs) ‘official’ DLC releases to get there, though. Having said that, HMX have never failed to reach a target of this nature (e.g. 1000 songs by the end of ’09), so I’ve got no reason to doubt they won’t achieve that this time around.

    Awesome post, Elfi! ^-^ <3

I have been hoping FOREVER that they would add “last date played” and “# of times played” sort options.

with 1000+ songs there are a bunch of songs I just forget I even have. It’d be really nice to go through and play songs that I downloaded, played once, and forgot about.

I agree completely! I guess for now we’ll just have to continue with our little surprises as we’re playing random setlists.

“What… ? I don’t remember downloading *insert song here*. Awesome!”

great information! I fully support this article :) Game info means a lot more to me when I know its coming from someone who knows the games very well!

  • Mcmax3000 says:

Great job on the article ElektraFi.

I felt the same way going from RB1 to RB2 that I do now as we’re preparing to move to RB3…

A better song sorting/selection menu is worth the price of the new game to me alone.

Everything else is just a bonus.

Looks very cool. This will definitely help us play more songs in the future.

I really am hoping they release more info about the Wii version. Like will we get RB1, RB2, and GD:RB export finally? I mean if Guitar Hero can do it, they can do it.

There is no “Like” button for this comment, but I completely concur… :) I’m super-curious to find out the answer to this one! Being non-US-based but having a friend over there just now (but not for very much longer), I’d like to know, if it’d make sense to order RB1, L:RB on amazon right now, mainly for later import. The prices you guys get are far better than what we have to face in Singapore…

There will definitely be over 2000 songs by the time RB3 is released, I believe it. They exceeded their expectations by RB2′s release, and with RBN contributing godly amounts of tracks, the count will pass 2000 in no time.

With all this press news, I’m unbelievably excited by RB3. The thing I’m most looking forward to, as a soon-to-be RBN author and artist, is seeing my authored songs on the RB3 engine. I’m excited about Pro mode and all the other stuff too, don’t get me wrong, but I’m more excited about seeing my stuff on RB3.

What I really want (and what I suspect anyone who throws a RB party or hosts a RB night at a bar would appreciate) is a nested menu showing bands on the top level, then individual songs when you select a specific band. Would make the whole “whose songs do you have?” process so much more streamlined.
