Behold: Rock Band 3 Songs and Video (Including Keyboard Unveiling)

Hold on to your hats folks… here’s the first look at in-game footage of Rock Band 3.

For the keyBOARD (not keytar… although there is a handle), green, red, blue, yellow or orange keys flow on a “stream” representing the notes to be played on five corresponding keyboard keys. In a new authentic Pro mode meant to help players segue to actual instruments, all 25 keys are used; the streams shifts left and right to cover the correct keys. The keyboard also works as a MIDI keyboard that can be connected to a computer.

“This is a real instrument and a real device,” says senior designer Sylvain Dubrofsky.

In addition to the new keyboard controller, also due for the game’s release are two advanced guitar controllers that take advantage of the Pro mode, one a full-sized, fully functional Fender guitar (all sold separately, no prices yet).

Other Rock Band 3 advances: improved animations, refined gameplay features — players can drop in and out of games, or change instruments and difficulty settings on the fly without stopping songs — and a easier-to-use song menu.

Of the 83 song setlist, the songs CONFIRMED for Rock Band 3 already include:

  • Dio – Rainbow in the Dark
  • Huey Lewis and the News – The Power of Love
  • Ida Maria – Oh My God
  • Jane’s Addiction – Been Caught Stealing
  • Jimi Hendrix – Crosstown Traffic
  • Joan Jett – I Love Rock and Roll
  • Juanes – Me Enamora
  • Metric – Combat Baby
  • Night Ranger – Sister Christian
  • Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train
  • Phoenix – Lasso
  • Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Rilo Kiley – Portions of Foxes
  • Smash Mouth – Walkin’ on the Sun
  • Spacehog – In the Meantime

Am I allowed to point out GH repeats or do I get shot for doing that?

    Travis Reply:

Do the GH repeats have harmonies or keyboards when you play them in GH?

Still, I’m interested in seeing which ones were previously in Guitar Hero and will now have more features in Rock Band.

    So, uh.. Go ahead. Haha.

    toymachine Reply:

    * Jane’s Addiction – Been Caught Stealing – GH6

    * Joan Jett – I Love Rock and Roll

    * Night Ranger – Sister Christian
    * Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train
    * Phoenix – Lasso – GH6 apparently
    * Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody – GH6

    * Spacehog – In the Meantime
    * Stone Temple Pilots – Plush

    Yap

    Travis Reply:

I was going to say “that’s it?” but there are still plenty of songs to be revealed.

    toymachine Reply:

Yeah same with Guitar Hero… Which also has 8 RB/RB DLC repeats!

    Max Reply:

I don’t know if I’d say it’s fair to point out GH6 songs since they wouldn’t have exactly known that there was going to be cross over when choosing the songs… :/

    RockBandAide Reply:

    RABBLE!

    Nick H Reply:

He’s right though… not just with songs but with gameplay mechanics.

“Pro” versions= Expert + (was implemented in GH: Metallica)
    Drop in-drop out-change difficulty on the fly= GH5

As a real pianist, I can see that they actually did a very impressive job with turning that into a playable instrument in RB3.

Although the setlist is a bit disappointing so far with the exception of Bohemian Rhapsody… I was hoping for some more metal or classic rock songs. Oh well, looks like I’ll just have to get both this and Warriors of rock for my fix to be settled…

    CloudWolf Reply:

Ehm, the pro mode is completely different than Expert+

    RockBandAide Reply:

Yeah, although we have no evidence yet, it sounds like “Pro” mode is COMPLETELY different than Expert+. Expert+ is just “harder expert,” but still on a plastic instrument. “Pro” mode is actually playing a REAL instrument with the help of a video game. Kind of a big difference.

  • Travis says:

Ahhhh. I won’t be able to sleep tonight. I’m way too excited now.

  • GurnKiller says:

Another article detailing some stuff about pro-mode gameplay and instruments, career mode, sorting options, etc.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Yup, all the details there are reflected above.

  • Joey says:

Awesome Awesome Awesome! I’m now unfortunately waaay too excited to sleep. Or wait five months… :(

  • Michael Prachar says:

    Yay!

  • jimmyinnernets says:

    OMG BONER!!!!!

Is that other guitar a Paul Reed Smithy model?

    jimmyinnernets Reply:

    Smith that is.

  • goronhead says:

Bohemian rhapsody? The hardest button to button? More Phoenix? This setlist is already awesome!

Only thing I really have left to hope for is upgraded drums. *crosses fingers*

    jimmyinnernets Reply:

Outside of the IONs, what else could there be?

    goronhead Reply:

They could go the way of arcade drum games and have a kit with more pads (optional, of course.)

Although the main upgrade I’m hoping for is double bass functionality.

  • superduper says:

As awesome and exciting as this is (I LOVE the way they’re doing the keyboard), I am most impressed with… Ida Maria on the setlist! HOLY POOPS!

    Big ups, Harmonix. Big. Ups.

Also, like last time, RB3 will come out just in time for my beeeeee-daaaaaay. Whoop!

  • Michael Prachar says:

And who gives a rats- about repeats? I want ALL of the best songs to play on the BEST game. As far as I’m concerned, when GH paves the licensing way that just makes it easier for us later on…

    Toymachine Reply:

When it’s said from the other side it’s seen as ridiculous though right?

    Hysteria Reply:

I don’t own any GH games so these songs are all new to for me to play. You’re the one trying to start something by making the first post be a RB vs GH thing.

    Michael Prachar Reply:

Um, no. There are half a dozen posts/replies above mine that I was specifically referring to…

  • Darth Logo says:

I SEE DIFFERENT GEMS FOR CYMBALS ON DRUMS!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!! ^_^

    Matt Reply:

    Where do you see that?

  • Steven says:

Where’s the rest of the video? They were just getting to stuff like DLC and hardware. THAT’S WHAT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW.

    SebastianSB Reply:

skip to the 4 minute mark on this video:

    RockBandAide Reply:

Working on fixing… gimme a few minutes.

  • spidercat says:

agreed, I’d like the rest of the video…..

    RockBandAide Reply:

I’m working as fast I can to fix right now… check back in a few minutes.

  • Julian G. says:

The Rilo Kiley song is “Portions For Foxes” just in case nobody else pointed it out.

    Jarpo Reply:

    You beat me to it.

  • SebastianSB says:

    mind = blown

  • PuppetMasterIX says:

I was expecting (and desperately hoping for) Bohemian Rhapsody from a mile away, and oh boy am I happy that it’s in here. I’m way too excited to sleep now. This game looks like it’ll perfect the RB formula… that is, if it solves one certain problem before it that all other RB games had.

*hopes for removal of strumming limit*

  • Toolbert says:

Sweetness! That just got my wife excited and she’s not easily excited about vidija games. The keyboard is going to open up more possibilities. I can only hope the setlist gets even grander. Dio, Nightranger, Whitesnake and The Cure (a much better Cure song) make me so damn excited!

  • edisinsane says:

Hell yes, Rainbow In The Dark!! I’ve been requesting that pretty much since I first knew about the request-a-song page at the official site.
Now I can finally retire the custom chart I did for it way back.

I’m blown away by the possibilities presented with Pro Mode. It’s gonna be an adventure unlearning my plastic guitar skills and making the jump to the real thing.

And I’d like to see what the hater crowd says now that they can’t use “learn a real instrument”. SUCK ON THAT, PRINCE!

  • LiquidKourage says:

DUDE. Rock Band live events are going to be insane now! Up to 7 people on stage playing simultaneously?

My questions (doubt they’re answerable at this stage, but…) are:
    * Will old DLC potentially be re-authored to accomodate harmonies/keyboards? (Don’t Stop Believing, I’m looking at you here.)
    * Will the RB3 vocal system be as issue-laden as Beatles was? (Problems for me here were the inability to fine-tune vocal controls, so that my wireless mic mod over a PA never worked right with Beatles. Community team can attest to that one!)
*Will there (please please please) be a “host mode” (so that all selections are controlled through a single controller, avoiding the inevitable red-button presses that make setting up a song take minutes instead of seconds)?
*Intelligent song searching? (With so many tracks, a really useful innovation would be to use a keyboard mechanic to type the first few letters of what you want and have the songlist update so that by typing “thi” could bring up Third Eye Blind, This Is a Call, Thin Lizzy, etc.)
*1080p support? (This is a personal one… I just updated all my Rock Band screens to HD LCD displays :D )

    Chris Reply:

Too bad the 360 can only handle 4 controllers, unless they figure out a way around that.

6 is the current max – any 3 instruments plus a gamepad with 3 vocalists.

If they make it so you can use 3 mics with 4 instruments, it would bump it to 7, and that seems feasible to me.

If they could get around that limit, the max (based on early rumours) would be 9 players – 3 guitars, 3 vocalists, drums, keyboard, and turntable.

Of course, we’re running into a screen real estate problem with even one more note path.

    Bleachman064 Reply:

In the video, you can see a drummer, two guitars, a keyboard, and two vocalist. I’m pretty sure they can get another mic in.

  • Anex says:

OMG OMG I need it now! The keyboard looks awesome I can’t wait to KeyVox!

I really do hope the RBN sonsg will be re-done because Amberian Dawn with keyboard is gonna OWN!

  • Nightshade Zero says:

I just realized, there’s a Spanish song in there. Interesting.

  • RedIon1992 says:

F*** yes! Looks like I’m going to import this one too!

Also, major props for including The Vines. Now can we get Ride as DLC plz kthxbai. :-P

    RockBandAide Reply:

The Vines… RULE!!! I was super pumped to see this song and Spacehog, too!

  • The Witticus says:

Walkin’ On the Sun. Hardest Button to Button, Crazy Train, Bohemian Rhapsody, Been Caught Steeling, and more… Plus the ability to learn the real instrument parts on these songs!!! This is just phenomenal on way too many levels!!!

  • SamPlasticGamer says:

bohemian rhapsody and break on through make the game an instant buy for me

  • Chess Kitty says:

^_^ this pleases me. I hope there’s quite a few more recent songs in the rest of the setlist, but I’m certainly not complaining – I like a lot of these songs. & there’s still over 60 songs to be announced so I have faith. I wonder what they’ll tell us at E3 that we didn’t already find out from this. Super happy that it’s a keyboard too.

  • Natloe says:

i would LOVE mr crowley as DLC for RB3

  • km3k says:

    So pumped right now!

  • Riosan says:

Huey Lewis? FUCK YES I LOVE YOU

  • CashOD says:

    Holy Hell!

  • Gokuroro says:

WOW! Now for RB3 to be completely and utterly PERFECT (for me), we only need 4 more things:
    1) Full Backwards Compatibility with previous DLC and imports (including Harmonies and Keyboards for every music that originally has those);
    2) The Beatles: Rock Band importing (including added Keyboards and, of course, harmonies);
    3) Full band MIDI instruments compatibility (through USB adapter or direct USB connection, in some cases), and by that I mean guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, of course;
    4) (people will disagree with me on this) Some J-Rock love (please, let Jeanne da Arc be on RB3 DLC). ;)

    SebastianSB Reply:

I’m still really hoping for #1 and #4 is pretty likely, but via DLC.

    RockBandAide Reply:

1 – Backwards compatibility has been essentially been confirmed in the video, however I wouldn’t hold your breath on older DLC adding in the new features. It’s like going to Best Buy and expecting them to upgrade your PS2 to a PS3 for free. There’s over 1,500 songs in the current library. Plus, I would rather have the time spent on making NEW DLC instead of “upgrading” the old DLC.
2 – Don’t expect to see Beatles exporting… very strict licensing agreements.
3 – This may be possible.
4 – J-Rock is on the way… no idea when, but it’s been discussed at Harmonix recently.

    Gokuroro Reply:

1 – I was not hoping on this being for free, but maybe a weekly upgrade on older (most downloaded?) DLCs would be really nice, maybe the ones who already bought it to pay like 50 cents would be really nice.
2 – I was hoping we were actually surprised here. ;)
3 – REALLY hoping for it, so I can use my own keyboard and my girlfriend’s guitar. XD
    4 – Will be waiting for it… >.<

    SebastianSB Reply:

“Plus, I would rather have the time spent on making NEW DLC instead of “upgrading” the old DLC.”

Very strongly disagree here. I think it should be a priority to expand the amount of songs the new features can be used in as widely as possible and as quickly as possible.

They probably won’t get around to all of them immediately if they do it, but seriously, how wrong will it feel to not have harmonies in Under Pressure or keyboard in The Final Countdown or The Camera Eye? I’d be 100% ok with paying some fee to gain access to the premium versions of old songs.

  • chenzo says:

Rainbows just came out of my eyes, my mouth, my nose, my ears, my butt and my penis, at the same time.

You should probably see a doctor.

  • Kirksplosion says:

I just don’t know what to say besides…

    I came.

  • InsaneElvis says:

I HATE jane’s addiction, and especially that song.

Outside of that, great, awesome, setlist.

Can’t wait for RB4 though and exportability so I can delete “Been caught stealing”

  • Augustus says:

I know I’m in the minority on this but while I’m pleased with everything we heard, I’m kinda disapointed there was no conformation/details on a bass controller. If they’re going forward with Pro mode I’d imagine there’d have to be one, but still it’d be nice to hear it.

    SebastianSB Reply:

They said there’s two guitar controllers, and bass is a guitar, so maybe that’s what they meant? I’m sure all questions will be answered at E3.

    Augustus Reply:

I think the two guitars are both “lead” with one being like the one we have with more buttons and the other being a real guitar, but I could be wrong.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Yeah, this is just a teaser of what’s to come. Just because they didn’t mention something in the quick teaser vid doesn’t mean it’s not coming in Rock Band 3. Expect a LOT more from E3.

    Augustus Reply:

Yeah, I figure it has to be coming I just want to know NOW! ;-)

  • Sumboxcar182 says:

In one of their Twitter accounts they said that they haven’t even show the big stuff yet. This game is looking ridiculous. As long as my ion works with pro mode I’ll be happy

  • Rodafowa says:

I was a bit disappointed with what we’ve seen of the setlist at first, but each time I come back to it I see more and more that excites me.

    Metric! Cure! Whitesnake! Oh my!

  • Matt says:

Hi hat functionality. They already have a port on the drums though.

  • Zaphod42 says:

Another question – or rather wish! – would be for RB3 to support 2 guitars (rhythm and lead) on certain songs. Think of it: the real estate for 4 highways is now already there, but not all songs actually have keys in them!

  • Mike says:

Wikipedia says Adam lamberts whatdya want from me is in the game. Idk if that’s reliable though. This keyboards opening up alot of song possibillites.

  • TreverUndeadXpdX says:

i know this isn’t the final song list but there needs to be more metal or else it’s gonna seem like GH5, i don’t like the song list much i hope they left out the good songs.

  • TreverUndeadXpdX says:

AND there’s a spanish song…come on Harmonix it looks cool but the song list is shit
