Green Day: Rock Band Opening Cinematic
My initial reaction when finding out the opening cinematic to Green Day: Rock Band was released was shock, but I guess that makes sense considering the game will be released in roughly three weeks.
If memory serves me correctly, the opening cinematic was performed by MK12, the same group who did the interstitial cinematics for The Beatles: Rock Band.
Check out the cinematic, if you want, below!
UPDATE: James from MK12 responded below in the comments with this:
And to those curious if this is the full thing or not — it is… it was their decision to do a 30 sec intro not ours. We are quite proud of it and it was accomplished over the period of a few months (full time). To those that don’t think there is enough detail i’m sorry we didn’t please you, but we tried to bring in elements from the various album covers as inspiration and tell a story in 30 seconds
[Thanks, Fluffy!]

That’s… short.
Not as impressive as the Beatles one… It was over before it started.
A bit short. I guess that’s whatshername saving Johnny (Jesus of Suburbia).

It’s an opening cinematic to a game, not the game itself. I think it’s pretty good, albeit short. If you judge a game based on opening cinematics, you’d probably be duped into playing Iron Man 2 right now.
But if you’re just going to troll and post obscenities than you might be happier somewhere else…

Im not trolling, im just saying its abit medeocore compared to TB:RB intro. I mean, its like 30 seconds compared to 2 minutes and 30 seconds for the beatles intro. The Beatles intro also covered their entire career and was spectacular. This only had 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot covered and just seems like they didnt try as hard as they could have.
This makes 3 (potential) problems with GD:RB so far;
1:Animations seem stale and details were ignored. (Plus we havent seen one dreamscape yet)
2:Intro felt rushed and underwhelming
3:Early materialsuch as Insomniac, Warning, and Nimrod were all almost entierly ignored. (39/Smooth and Kerplunk dont count due to the masters not being in working order)
Also, when was swearing not allowed in comments? I have seen many other instances of people swearing that you never said anything about.
It seems that your being abit fanboyish about this. Im not saying it sucks, im just saying its no pirfect and they could have done better.

If you’re going to let an intro to a game bother you rather than the quality of the gameplay, I think that you’re clearly looking for reasons to hate this game. If you don’t like Green Day, that’s fine, but crapping on other people’s enthusiasm is just rude.
There are no Dreamscapes in this game. Not sure where you got the impression that there would be. I don’t need to expand on the reason for their exclusion, as the other commenters have addressed adequately.
As to your complaint about certain songs not appearing in the game, this issue has been beaten to death. They’re not in the game, but there are another 45 songs that are. Let’s move on and (if you are a Green Day fan), be happy that there are that many.
And am I being a bit fanboy on this? I don’t know… but I do run a Rock Band website…
It’s short, and I’m kinda dissappointed they didn’t go through images from all of the albums, rather than just 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot.
It could have started out with the album cover from Dookie, zoomed in on the man from 21st century breakdown’s cover, spraypainting pictures of faces with yellow dots covering them (Nimrod cover). Camera turns around real quick and sees Green Day walking by in black and white (Warning cover). Cut back to guy spraypainting, insomniac cover is now what he’s spraypainting on. Now Gloria comes in on the Motorcycle to save him from the robot things with the heart grenade (american idiot), and they kiss (21st Century Breakdown).
all to the tune of a green day medley that lasts more than 30 seconds.

You win.
Did anyone read the comments on that video over at GT? Wow, there are a lot of trolls and morons over there. “What, the Harmony made this?” What?
Anyways, this video is really really short. I wonder if that’s the full opening cinematic, or more like a teaser cinematic to be used in a commercial. If that’s the full one, it pales in comparison to the Beatles video.
Yeah. I’m holding out for an extended version in the actual game. But if Harmonix is hurting money-wise right now then the opening cinematic is definitely something I can live without.

Yeah, I’ll take NO opening cinematic before I’ll take cutbacks in gameplay/charting/etc. Priorities

Bingo. I don’t buy the games because of cinematics, but rather gameplay. I think the cinematics fit more the the nature of The Beatles, anyway. I don’t think of grandiose visuals when I think of Green day.
Wow, that was underwhelming. I’m still holding out hopes for this game but so far everything is pointing to it being a massive disappointment.
- Missing a handful of key songs
- No dreamscapes
- No new innovations
- Only 3 venues
- No DLC
I’m not trying to ‘troll’ either, I’ve been a fan since Dookie and I’ve even got tickets to see them live this summer so I’m pretty bummed out by it looking so rushed.

HMX isn’t really ruling out the possibility of future Green Day DLC. They’ve basically retracted that original statement.

How exactly would you do dreamscapes in this game? The whole point of the dreamscapes in TB:RB was to get around the fact that The Beatles didn’t perform live in their later years. Green Day has never been a studio band, so dreamscapes don’t fit with their career. I definitely wish there were more than 3 venues, but dreamscapes would fit with the band about as much as it would have fit for The Beatles to be performing at the MGM Grand in the last half of TB:RB.
And what innovations would you expect from it? They ARE including harmonies, so at least it’s not a rebranded RB2 with new songs. If you want innovations, you should wait for the franchise game (RB3) this fall. The fall game will pretty much always be the innovative game because that’s the biggest season for game sales.

Dreamscapes could have easily been implemented. Look at the imagery of that opening intro, I wouldn’t have minded playing a track or two with those visuals as the background instead of a live performance. And speaking of live, how could HMX leave out Woodstock? It’s arguably GD’s most iconic performance and should no doubt have been included. HMX has given the reason that daytime venues can’t be done with the game engine, then how is it that they created The Beatles rooftop performance? Why not have Basket Case set up as a live music video shoot? There are so many creative things that could have been done with this title that weren’t.
I must’ve missed the statement about DLC being possible, but my understanding is that it can’t be done since all performances were mo-capped.

There’s no doubt that there’s plenty of imagery in GD’s music. That’s not the point. There’s imagery in practically every band’s music, so why shouldn’t ALL songs have a dreamscape? The point of the dreamscapes were to get around showing the band sitting in the studio playing every song in the last half of TB:RB. They were a workaround to keep the background from being boring. With Green Day, they’re famous for great live shows, so dreamscapes are unnecessary.
Music video shoots would have definitely been cool. Lots of stuff would have been cool for this game, but there was a deadline. When it comes down to it, getting the music in the game is most important, and you just try to get as many “cool” things in it as you can with the time given. They couldn’t push the game back, or you’d have RB3 and GD:RB launching side-by-side. Not exactly good for business.
Hopefully they’ll either budget more time for future band-specific titles, or they’ll just stop them altogether and focus on innovating the main franchise.

I think your last statement gets to the heart of the matter. With comments ranging from “GREEN DAY?! WTF?!” to “Why didn’t they include Tre Cool’s sophomore year variety school drum solo?!” it’s clear that there’s no possible way Harmonix is going to be able to please all of the community, and anyone that tries to reconcile between the extremes is wasting their time.
Here’s what everyone should remember:
If you DON’T like Green Day, this probably isn’t the game for you. It wasn’t made with you in mind, so keep buying (or for some of you, complaining about) DLC until Rock Band 3 comes out later this year, where Harmonix is OBVIOUSLY focusing MOST of their resources.
If you DO like Green Day, please realize that while Harmonix is committed to making a great experience through a quality game, they cannot commit a significant portion of their resources to a game that is targeted towards a specific niche of music gamers. To make sure that they maximize the amount of people picking up this game, they clearly tried to get their most popular music, but were unable to get EVERYTHING the band put out due to a number of issues that have been stated numerous times on this site. As my dad would say, “Just be happy you got some at all…” although he has never said that in respect to Green Day. He’s more familiar with Morris Day than Green Day.
My vote is that this isn’t the whole thing; or it’s not even the opening cinematic at all but, rather, some other cut-scene; maybe the “congrats – you won!” ending cine?
Even Lego had a lot more to see. In the grand scope of the entire game, the opening cine must be pretty cheap to do (especially when farmed out and not using HMX resources) and it gets TONS of exposure; talk about bang for your buck advertising…
Anyway, it seems like a huge fail if this is the whole thing. Considering how much interent exposure it will have I just don’t see HMX making a blunder like that.
Or… maybe Bille Joe said something like “keep it under 30 seconds so we can get to it!!!” But probably not…
Also, there’s an article with Tre Cool talking about the possibility of 39/Smooth and Kerplunk being DLC.
Who cares if it’s 30 seconds? It spanned everything Green Day has stood for through the past 10 years. The way they mixed 3 songs like that was really cool. I have nothing to complain about this game at all.
I really liked the mashed-up song they created.
I’m not trolling, and I’m not going to say the game is going to be teh suxorz….
But Green Day: Rock Band has definitely been half-assed when compared to not only The Beatles: Rock Band but other games in the franchise. You’re fooling yourself if you’re saying it hasn’t… the opening cinematic, three venues, no confirmation for DLC…
The charts may be fun, and I know they couldn’t get some of the earlier Green Day stuff, but its just so… underwhelming right now as it is.
I know, I know, don’t judge until you buy. I kind of just assumed Harmonix would have a little bit more attention to detail and attempt to make another full-scale experience like they made for the Beatles. I hate to say it but this is looking more and more like a cash-in…
The only reason to buy this or ANY OTHER single-artist game is because you like the songs by that artist on the disk. If you don’t, then, frankly the game isn’t for you. I don’t see what complaining about it does.
The Beatles opening cinematic was done by Passion, MK12 only did the animated interstitials, FYI.
