Top 10 Reasons for Green Day Rock Band

Green Day

There had been rumors for awhile, and I knew that if there was ever a Green Day Rock Band, it would be a very polarizing topic, so I pulled together this post that I think anyone that has a feeling one way or another about the announcement should take a look at.

10. Money – Let’s go ahead and get this one out of the way.  Harmonix is a for-profit company, first and foremost, and they makes games so they can make money.  HOWEVER… making games for profit is NOT mutually exclusive from producing a unique music gaming experience.  Harmonix has an excellent track record of making profitable, high-quality music games, so if there is money to be made by producing a game, they have every right to do so.  In fact, now that they are owned by MTV Games, and ultimately Viacom, their shareholders expect the company to contribute in a positive way to the bottom line.

9.  MTV – I’m guessing the wheels for this game were probably set in motion very shortly after Harmonix was acquired by MTV Games.  With the release of the first band-centric music game, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, I think MTV Games insisted on testing the waters with a similar game.  But wait, what about the Beatles: Rock Band, you say?  The Beatles was definitely the exception to a potential shift to band-centric releases.  Even if the game had not been well received and successful, it would still be a feather in the cap for MTV to say “Hah… look, we got the Beatles!  They’re not even on iTunes!”  But Harmonix at their core is still an innovator, and I have a feeling that the ultimate decision for this game came from higher-ups at MTV Games, whether Harmonix was jazzed about the idea or not.

8. What If… - Whether you agree with the band-centric game model or not, releasing an all Beatles game was a no brainer.  But will another band work? They were arguably the greatest band ever, and the production team set the bar pretty high.  So after you do an all Beatles game, where do you go from there?  Good question, and the only way to test that theory is with another band.  In addition to Green Day, there have been rumors with other band-centric Rock Band games including The Who, U2, Queen, Pearl Jam, and Pink Floyd.  But what happens if it fails?  It’s not going to go over well with the band, the fans, and the record company, so what better way to try it out than with a less-iconic and less-significant band out of all the potential players?  Out of all the bands mentioned above, I bet I’m not alone in my preference for Green Day to fail than any of the other bands.

7.  Field Testing Rock Band 3 Features – This is pure speculation at this point, but there could be new features in this game that Harmonix is field testing before deciding whether or not they make the cut in the inevitable Rock Band 3.

6.  Market Penetration – In my opinion, Green Day appeals to a younger demographic than the typical Rock Band player.  I don’t have any evidence to back this up, but based on my experience, the average age of a Rock Band 2 player is college aged, and if I had to guess on the average age of a Green Day fan, I would guess something in the high school age, which is ironic considering they’ve been together since before most of their fans were born.  This game could be gunning for those kids who’ve always thought “plastic instruments are so lame,” but who might overlook that fact to give it a try if it involves their favorite band.

5. Easy to Make – Not much is known about the game yet, but it’s safe to assume it is based off of the Rock Band 2 engine.  In theory, Harmonix will be re-skinning Rock Band 2 for a customized Green Day experience.  Based on the VGA premiere trailer, it looks like a lot has changed, not just the character avatars.  The note highway, fonts, and venues are all changed.  There’s also the motion capturing of the band for authenticity.  And obviously you’ve got to chart all the songs selected for the game.  No small undertaking, but it goes without saying that before this was given the green light, some detailed financial models were prepared that showed a return greater than the cost of the effort.

4. Export/Import – This is more of a feature than a reason for its existence, but if Track Packs exist, than why can’t this?  Announced nearly immediately following the first trailer at the VGAs, Green Day Rock Band will been able to fully export songs into Rock Band 2 (provide you’re not on the Wii… sorry, you two), as well as be able to import Green Day DLC into the game.  The Beatles: Rock Band was unique in their “walled garden” approach to the import/export of their music, one can only assume due to licensing issues.  This was probably one of the trade offs made during production… since you’re not the Beatles, you have to allow your music to be exported to Rock Band 2.

3. Killing Time - The Beatles: Rock Band was about as excellent of an advertisement for Harmonix’s dedicated services to artists as possible, and I definitely think that many of the artists steadfast on keeping their music out of video games may be reconsidering (i.e. Led Zeppelin).  And if they are now interested, it will take time to sway them into licensing their music over to Harmonix for a future game, as well as producing said game to a point where it can be properly announced.  Also, Green Day Rock Band should not be Harmonix’s big game announcement for next year.  So to kill time between now and the next big game, either Rock Band 3 or (fingers crossed) Led Zeppelin: Rock Band, here’s a Green Day game!

2. It Worked for Guitar Hero – Look, I don’t like this one as much as you, either, but it’s true.  Whether you call it “milking the franchise,” “selling out,” or “destroying the game,” the fact that you are continually releasing new games (not just DLC) keeps the name recognition of the franchise front and center at retail outlets.  Releasing DLC is great for the FANS of the franchise, but it doesn’t help the brand unless you’re touting how many songs are available in the online store, which really isn’t a selling point to your average soccer mom at Target.  But if you plunk another Rock Band title with a band she’s heard of, she’ll start recognizing Rock Band as a separate (and in my obvious opinion, superior) franchise.  We know that Activision will take any word related to music and put Hero behind it and make a game, and we don’t want that to happen to Rock Band, but like it or not, the “Hero” brand has never been more recognizable to people NOT familiar with these games.  My mom still calls it “Guitar Hero Beatles” because she, like most people, just aren’t as familiar with the Rock Band brand.  I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve run into morons at Best Buy telling me that Rock Band is just copying Guitar Hero (my girlfriend was with me once when we heard that and I heard her mutter under her breath “Here we go…”).  With this approach, they should be able to eat away at even more of Guitar Hero’s market share.

1. People Like Green Day – Finally, whether YOU like them or not, there are people out there that really love Green Day… and there’s a LOT of them.  Take a look at their stats:  Green Day has sold over 65 million albums (22 million in the US alone), nine albums with at least a Gold status (including one Diamond status album), and 3 Grammy’s.  I get that the band is a very polarizing band… you either love ‘em or hate ‘em, which I think makes more sense for a full game vs. just DLC.  The people that love Green Day will buy it.  The people that don’t, won’t buy it.

I know this probably isn’t going to change anyone’s minds on whether they plan on purchasing this (honestly, that’s Harmonix’s job), but I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts in the comments, so get to posting, will ya?!

35 years old (me that is). Love Green Day. Day 1 purchase at full retail price, unless I find it cheaper on Amazon ;-p

  • Francesco Poli says:

I’d love if this was the new frontier for track packs, too. But I’m not sure this kind of approach is getting to players.

Then again, I’m not sure if Harmonix’s all-about-music approach is getting to players, either. It sure isn’t getting to reviewers, who seem to treat every new music game as if it had to offer more than new tracks to work. Maybe Guitar Hero, which is as far behind RB in gameplay as it is ahead in sales (hint to EA: maybe you should start pushing your product in Europe, too).

But RB? The formula’s perfect, what remains (outside of vocal harmonies or maybe full rhythm/lead guitar support alongside the combined track) is mostly cosmetic.

Again, this stems more from a misunderstanding about the games being about ZOMG CHALLENGE!!1 instead of the music – eg all the top-tier players whining that the game is “too easy” – as if some of the greatest songs ever written weren’t some four chords and a lot of heart (thank you, Beatles).

However, if Harmonix plans to sell this for more than track pack price ($20), they’re just deluding themselves.

    RockBandAide Reply:

I don’t think it’ll be $20 (for the programming cost in adding in the cosmetic features alone), but based on the current reaction, I can’t imagine they’ll price it at full retail… especially if there’s an export fee on top of that.

  • pacoguevara says:

Since I’m not a fan I’m not buying the game. If the songs were made available as DLC I would definately buy some, but a full game (although I could export it) is a no go for me.

    Sorry, but I’ll pass.

  • WORD UP.

Great article man, I’m definitely picking up Green Day, as they are my favorite band. But I think it will be fun even if you were apathetic towards them.

  • Joe Rybicki says:

Excellent piece, sir. But I think you may be selling the band short. Their earlier stuff, being fairly straightforward pop-punk, may appeal to high-schoolers more than older listeners, but they’ve been doing some very interesting things over the last few years. Unless you positively can’t stand anything even approaching pop-punk, I’d really recommend you check out American Idiot — it’s just a big, brilliant rock album.

I actually grew to hate the band after Dookie got so overplayed, and had absolutely no interest in them for years, but American Idiot is one of my favorite albums of the last decade. Possibly ever. It’s just absurdly listenable, and I’m hoping to hell that most (if not all) of the album makes it to the game.

    RockBandAide Reply:

My knowledge of them kinda stopped after Dookie. I too loved that album until it got soooo overplayed. Haven’t listened to it since then, so it’ll probably be nostalgic to play in Rock Band. I’ll be picking it up on release day (no surprise there), but I’m not a huge Green Day fan. I’m hoping Harmonix packs in more features than just a reskinned RB2 with Green Day tracks, but we’ll have to wait and see…

  • Joe Rybicki says:

@Francesco Poli — Oooh, Green Day would be an excellent band for vocal harmony support, too.

  • FrankieB says:

I swear I have prayed to the gods since Guitar Hero 1 came out that I would one day see my most favorite band of all time have some songs featured in a plastic instrument game. I nearly wept when those tracks from their new album made it onto Rock Band 2.

But now a full game? I really am having a difficult time trying to put into words how ecstatic I am over this. Harmonix gave me the best Christmas gift I could ever receive in my life and that’s a Green Day: Rock Band announcement.

Let the hater’s hate. More Green Day for me!

  • iamtheddrman says:

I’m excited about this game simply because it means we’ll finally be getting stuff from Dookie and Nimrod. Hopefully they will include ALL the big hits from those albums. American Idiot sucked IMO, but their newest seems pretty good. I think overall, the game should be pretty fun, though it certainly won’t appeal to everyone. I guess it’s just a waiting game to see if this game has any new innovations or if it’s just a reskin of RB2.

  • 1Chenzo says:

Pink Floyd Rock Band? Yes. Led Zeppelin, yes, of course. Stones, ok… sure… But GREEN DAY?

    I’m a hater. Won’t own.

    I want RB3.

  • DJMattB241 says:

I wonder if this will be a Green Day-only affair, or if it’ll have mixed tracks a la GH: Aerosmith. I don’t know that Green Day has enough hits to cover an entire game on their own…

    RockBandAide Reply:

My preference would be to keep it all Green Day, even if you have to get some deeper cuts to fill out a longer track listing (which is odd, because I only like a handful of old Green Day songs). However, I think the game might be more successful if they add other artists to beef the track listing up (since you’ll be able to export to RB2).

    Cassie Drake Reply:

I want the on-disc tracklist to be Green Day only, but for maybe certain bands? genres? of DLC to be playable as well.

  • Cassie Drake says:

I’m getting on the sheer fact alone that it’s a ROCK BAND GAME. I’ve got every other RB game. I love having TONS AND TONS of songs to play. And I love Green Day [prior to 21stCB... really can't stand that album].

I’d prefer for it to be a Track Pack à la AC/DC Live though. I hope it’s not FULL price. I’d pay if it was around 40$. I’m just really stoked about getting some old school Green Day songs into my RB library, but to be honest, I doubt I’ll ever play them on the Green Day Rock Band disc. I’ll probably export and then forget the separate game ever existed.

    I just want RB3 now. =/

    Joe Rybicki Reply:

Agreed on the $40 sentiment. I think that’d be the sweet spot for this game. It says “hey, we know this isn’t a brand-new game, and we know it’s not the Beatles, but it’s still more than a track pack.” I don’t think it’s fairly likely, understand. But I think it’d be the best move.

  • Cameron says:

I could not disagree more with this article. Like @Joe Rybicki you are selling the band short. I honestly believe that if HMX came out with either The Who, U2, Queen, Pearl Jam, or Pink Floyd Green Day would out sell half of these bands. Green Day has had more recent popular albums then any of those bands mentioned. I understand that The Who, Pink Floyd, and Queen are 70′s bands and can’t make new albums but all of these bands except U2 and Pearl Jam are old bands. Most of the people you mentioned, college and high school aged kids, have never heard of The Who, Pink Floyd, or Queen and don’t listen to their music. Most of those band would appeal a older generation that probably could play Rock Band if they tried. Yes the Beatles were an old 60′s band that sold very well but their music is the most played music around the world and very popular though may generations unlike the other old school bands you mentioned.

Now I am not saying that Green Day was the best choice to make a game for and I don’t think it is going to sell millions of copies but it is popular for the age demo that is playing Rock Band and it is a good choice. Also Green Day has more songs that were popular then other old school bands. I mean Queen, The Who, Pink Floyd, U2, and Pearl Jam don’t have enough good-popular songs to make game specifically for them.

I am 34 years old myself so I don’t really fit in the typical age demo you mentioned and it may be that I am a little byes because I have been a Green Day fan since the early 90′s and I am tried of reading on numerous forums that people think this is a bad idea. I am super excited that this is coming out and can’t wait to get my hands on it. I do agree with your #1. You either love them or hate them. If you do you will buy it, if you don’t then you won’t.

    Metallichris71 Reply:

    “U2……don’t have enough good-popular songs”

That’s the most ridiculous thing I have read all week. Most popular band of the last 30 years.

    p0rksta Reply:

Agreeing completely with Cameron, I couldn’t name three U2 songs. They are not the most popular band of the past 30 years.

  • Ibbored says:

Green Day has been around for 20+ years, and as far as a modern band goes they’re likely one of the biggest out there. While there are more deserving classic rock bands out there, I highly doubt any of them would sell nearly as well as Green Day, which will appeal to current young fans, and nostalgic 20-30 somethings from the early 90′s as well.

I’m just glad its coming on a exclusive exportable disc, cause I’d probably buy all the Green Day DLC and this makes it cheaper :)

As for other band cameos, I’d personally prefer it be just green day songs, but they do Ramones Covers from time to time, I wouldn’t be too shocked if there was some classic punk like Ramones or The Clash. I wouldn’t be disappointed either, as long as it doesn’t cut into my Green Day tracks.

  • Kirksplosion says:

I’ll pick it up for all the pre-American Idiot stuff, but will definitely not be buying day one. I’ll wait for this thing to drop down to the $20 – $30 range. Spending more on this than the AC/DC pack seems ludicrous, since AC/DC > Green Day. That’s taking into consideration that I just want this for the export more than anything (Don’t have to play as Billie Joe to enjoy Green Day songs…). And, in my opinion, the new album is worse than American Idiot…

  • Jeff Atwood says:

Excellent article, just want to say how well researched and argued this is!

  • Katherine says:

I personally can’t wait, Green Day is one of my favourite bands and Mike Dirnt inspired me to become a bassist myself.

I hope that they put some pre-Dookie stuff in there (especially 39/Smooth), because that was some of their best music I think.

I think this game will sell HUGE, a lot of teenagers know and LOVE Green Day, and also love Rock Band.

  • toymachine says:

great article but I’m gonna baw a bit at the fact that nobody seems to ever consider Radiohead. There is no other respectable band left releasing new content as good as them :P

  • Simon says:

Very good article. This game is going to be a huge success because the people behind it are the perfect people to do the band justice. I mean……Nimrod! American Idiot! The couldn’t have picked a better fit for Rock Band than Green Day.

  • davebo says:

I love the DLC model so much, that it’s now all I want. I enjoyed a great deal of RB1, but by the time RB2 came out I had such a nice DLC collection of songs that I loved, that all I could was how many songs there are in RB2 that I just can’t stand. I go through the tour mode and complete all the make your own setlists, and most of the random setlists, but I can’t stand playing the RB2 songs over and over.

This goes the same for any disc release, be it Lego Rock Band, Beatles or Green Day. I want to play just the songs I want, when I want them. So release them as DLC and I promise I’ll buy the ones I’m interested in, but force me to buy a whole disc and an export key for the couple of songs I real want and you’ve lost a sale. Sorry Harmonix, but I stand by my decision that you should be updating the game engine for free and just pushing DLC.

When I say updating the game engine, I mean making it easier to switch instruments and fixing the Invite Player menu so that frequent played-with friends juump to the top, or let me scroll faster. It shouldn’t take 45 seconds to invite one person.

  • Kornsaq says:

You’ll also notice that its not just the younger crowd that likes them. A lot of us in the mid 20s to 30s loved their older stuff. I personally don’t care for the newer stuff, but it seems this game will be the only way we get to have the awesomeness that is the “Dookie” album

  • Mike says:

Your point about Green Day having “younger” fans is true, but I don’t agree that Green Day fans are predominately in high school. The band exploded in the early 90s. Dookie was released in 1994, and that’s when the band got huge. I was in 4th grade and they instantly became my favorite band, and are still one of my favorite bands today. I’m 26 and I’ve been out of college for 3 years.

I think that’s what makes this game such a smart choice. Green Day fans run the gamut from about the ages of 13 to 40. That’s the exact perfect demographic to market a videogame to. The Who and Pink Floyd are great, but most of their fans are outside of the game-console owning population. I’d wager most Green Day fans already own a game console.

  • murph says:

i would much prefer GD DLC and picking a choosing a few songs i want (Dookie) than being forced to buy a whole game and pay an export fee on top of that, for a whole lot of tracks i don’t want. and i cringe at the thought of “Time of your life” being in this game. i &$%&#( hate that song.
