DLC for 3/12: “Weird Science” and “Rosanna”

Chet

Four weeks left! And one of those weeks should be the last three singles from Rock Band Blitz, so we’re looking at only three weeks of new content (and the final week of content will only be one song)! Here’s what we can look forward to next week…

  • Oingo Boingo – Weird Science *
  • Toto – Rosanna

* Denotes Pro-Guitar/Bass chart availability for $.99.

  • StyrofoamTuph says:

Damn, I was hoping we would get Africa by Toto but Rosanna might be worth buying.

  • Rockox says:

    VERY cool picks!

    Love the Bill Paxton photo.

  • Kevin says:

Bleh! Yuck! Disgusting! Not me type of music. Skipping next week.

    Haggler Reply:

    Was that really necessary?

    Nathan Reply:

    it was just an opinion…

    Plainclothes Man Reply:

He meant to say Yes! Awesome! Totally Rad! Tis me type of music!! Will buy next week!

    RockBandAide Reply:

    You have the laziest comments.

    Haggler Reply:

“Sorry, but there’s a difference between saying “not for me” and simply calling it “[disgusting’”. The former is an opinion; the latter is a judgment of quality, which in this case simply doesn’t apply.”

    Taco Reply:

What was the point of the quotation marks? In any case, it’s still an opinion, whether you like it or not.

    Taco Reply:

Now I see that you actually were quoting something. My bad.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Let me give you a run down of his comments:

    - “Bleh! Yuck! Disgusting!”
    - “Meh!”
    - “Ehh!!”
    - “Bleh!”
    - “Huh?”

As I said, lazy. You don’t have to like the DLC. You can even state your opinion as to why. But this is just lazy and adds nothing to any insightful discourse.

  • Cokes says:

    Underwhelming.

Maybe they have something big planned to close things out, though.

    Xanadu Reply:

DLC budget is only as big as sales.

  • Meatball says:

Damn. Where is “Hold the Line” and “Africa” by Toto??!!!?? I guess I’ll never get them now

    Toad3000 Reply:

My thoughts exactly. I enjoy Rosanna, but I LOVE Africa and Hold the Line.

  • Croq says:

These are both great songs, but like others, I would have liked to see “Africa” from Toto too.

  • Ben the Wii Player says:

We know weekly DLC is over, but is there any hope for like Bi-monthly? Or is this it?

    RockBandAide Reply:

Technically, Harmonix could release DLC whenever they want, but let’s be realistic, it’s not going to happen.

    Chas Reply:

They have nothing planned after April and aren’t actively seeking new content. They did leave open the possibility of more DLC in the future if the right opportunity came along, but it’s more likely that anything along those lines would be a one-time deal as opposed to a return to regular DLC.

As for what the right opportunity might be, I would assume that a band or label would either have to cover the costs themselves or it would have to be a guaranteed money maker (like Metallica). In any event, I believe a band/label would have to approach them, not the other way around.

    RBGHfam Reply:

“They did leave open the possibility of more DLC in the future if the right opportunity came along”
-I think they said the same thing about the Beatles game :(

Pretty disappointing week imo, considering its over in early April and we only get one song the last week, oh well. Most likely the The End or When the Musics Over which would be cool.

Hopefully big bands can still go through RBN but I’m not holding my breath.

    Nick Reply:

RBN will still be active on the 360, but is ending on the PS3

    Chas Reply:

I’d have to imagine that some RBN developers will take this as an opportunity to go after bigger names, but I think those will still be the exception rather than the rule.

  • dc32 says:

Finally, Oingo Boingo in Rock Band, a shame though this is all there’ll ever be.

    Struble Reply:

Agreed. I’d love so many of their tracks in the game. But I had given up hope when I put them in as one of my requests in Rock Band World, and it was one of the lowest number of requests of all the bands I put in. So it’s definitely a welcome surprise, even if it’s not the song I’d be the most excited for. From a marketing stand-point, though, it’s probably their most widely known song. So glad to have gotten something from them.

I’m not getting my hopes up for my other surprisingly low-requested Gary Numan, though.

    Joe Shredder Reply:

Agreed – Finally get some Boingo and it’s just a soundtrack. Meh, I’ll take it anyway :)

Also would rather have had Africa by Toto but Rosanna is still a buy.

Shocked to get these so late in the game.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Oingo Boingo’s most iconic song is definitely “Weird Science.” It’s probably not their best, but you can’t blame them for releasing the song people are most familiar with.

    Toad3000 Reply:

And then we have the matter of the Toto song choice… :P

    RockBandAide Reply:

    It wasn’t a choice… https://twitter.com/RockBand/status/310044031214288896

    Toad3000 Reply:

Well, damn. I mean, it’s still appreciated, but damn!

  • paul says:

    Ugh, underwhelming indeed.

  • GoldenEarring says:

    Nice Toto!
But where is the third song?

  • Sudobyte says:

Marten from QC would be happy. I might have to give the songs more of a listen but neither one jumps out at me as insta-buy.

  • Rockox says:

I would’ve preferred “Who Do You Want To Be” from Oingo Boingo, but “Weird Science” is alright too.

    Joe Shredder Reply:

    That would have been awesome!

  • Sidd says:

haaarrrrible as Howard would say. Anywho just going to go to my rain day list and pcik some songs off there.

    MrMet2087 Reply:

    Hoo hoo Robin.

  • Echoindia says:

Glad to see Toto but Hold the Line or Africa would’ve been better

  • Amo says:

Like everyone, I’m sad because now I know that I will never be able to get Africa or Hold the Line in my Rock Band 3 =(.

(And I hate Rosanna, that don’t help.)

  • Gbangr says:

Good couple of songs – will get them both, disappointing it’s Rosanna rather then Africa though.

  • Chris says:

I was kind of expecting bigger releases. By bigger I mean more per week as we come to the end. I really hope this final “fitting” song isnt just a one song release. I’d love some epic finale tracks!

    Tim the Enchanter Reply:

The final week is just one song.

    Primo1854 Reply:

I agree with you. There should be a shit load of songs being released, not just 2! HMX you f@#$ing suck! These are 2 good songs though.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Oh, so the quantity of additional content and accessories should be increased at the end of a product’s life cycle?

    OK, good luck with that.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Literally the first sentence in this post says that the final week will be one song.

    LoopyChew Reply:

    Second sentence.

    Sam Reply:

Why is no one calling it out? How can the last song NOT be Semisonic’s CLosing Time? I mean I will be stunned if that isn’t it.

    RockBandAide Reply:

You’re probably gonna be stunned, then.

  • dale says:

i just realized this are “oz the great and powerful” singles

    zOmBiEcLoWn Reply:

Oh yeah! Danny Elfman, Toto… ;)

  • peterike says:

Really scraping out the last bits of junk in the far corners of the DLC drawer.

    Ospero Reply:

Riiight…because a #2 hit that finished 14th in the year-end charts of 1982 is obviously “junk”.

Sorry, but there’s a difference between saying “not for me” and simply calling it “junk”. The former is an opinion; the latter is a judgment of quality, which in this case simply doesn’t apply.

    RockBandAide Reply:

“Sorry, but there’s a difference between saying “not for me” and simply calling it “junk”. The former is an opinion; the latter is a judgment of quality, which in this case simply doesn’t apply.”

I need to bookmark this comment and paste it whenever needed (which sadly after five years is still extremely common).

    peterike Reply:

Sorry folks, but Toto and Oingo Boingo are D list bands at best. Harmonix has been releasing so much junk in the past year-plus that people seem to forget that this game used to release bands like Nirvana, The Clash, Hendrix, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, John Lennon, Creedence, Elvis Costello and more. These were major acts in the history of rock music. The past year has been little more than scrubs, also-rans, and a relentless monotony of sound-alike bands.

    Quality is NOT subjective.

    RockBandAide Reply:

    Yes it is.

    RB Drummer Reply:

Oingo Boingo is a seminal band from the 80s and they were huge. I’m glad to get them in Rock Band, but it’s a shame that it’s so late in the game because they are absolutely worthy of an entire pack whether peterike likes them or not.

Weird Science is probably the best chance for bigger sales, but coupling that song with Dead Man’s Party and a deep cut like Violent Love would’ve been the bomb.

I’m really surprised that Toto is getting all the love in this comment stream and Boingo isn’t even getting mentioned except for the “both these bands suck” comments. I always thought Toto was the “meh” band and OB kicked arse. :)

    Ospero Reply:

Check the chart positions for both bands on Wikipedia. Oingo Boingo are a cult favourite; Toto were mainstream-level big in their day, so it stands to reason more people are familiar with Toto.

    Joe Shredder Reply:

“Oingo Boingo is a seminal band from the 80s and they were huge. I’m glad to get them in Rock Band, but it’s a shame that it’s so late in the game because they are absolutely worthy of an entire pack whether some douchebag likes them or not.”

    100% Agreed.

    Ospero Reply:

Toto and Oingo Boingo are by no means comparable, and if the description “D-Lister” applies to either, Oingo Boingo are the candidate – by chart success, not by quality. But if you name Elvis Costello, who made his name not by big hits, but by influencing other musicians, Oingo Boingo belong in that same category, though the artists’ respective levels of influence are debatable.

A band with four top 10 hits over its career, among them a number 1 hit, is not D-list material by any stretch, especially compared to acts like Elvis Costello or The Clash (this is not making a statement about quality, merely about chart impact and therefore influence on the general public). You don’t like Toto, we got that. Toto are not on the same level as Elvis Costello or The Clash, that might or might not be provably wrong (depending on your definition of “same level”).

Also, we got “junk” (your definition) even at the height of the game. Spoon? Hautewerk? Locksley? Neon Trees (who had precisely one hit at the time, yet got a 3-pack)? A full Pixies album (same category as Costello or Oingo Boingo)? And conversely, the last year has had a lot of big names too – Aerosmith? Elton John? Chicago? Linkin Park? Carrie Underwood? Yes, the quantity and the name recognition have dropped off over the last year, but tarring all of 2012′s DLC with the same brush doesn’t do it justice by any stretch.

    peterike Reply:

I’m not going to get into the “quality is objective” argument because it’s hopeless, largely because Americans have spent decades being taught a lot of rot about the primacy of their meaningless opinions. Really, too many people can’t even conceive that the notion “your opinion is less valuable than someone else’s opinion” could possibly be true. Yet it IS true. “I like it” doesn’t mean “it’s good.” And yes, you can like complete junk, like Chicago and Linkin Park, while still being aware enough to acknowledge it’s junk. Hey, I love The Moody Blues, but really, they’re just schlock-meisters.

Let’s sum up by saying that The Beatles aren’t a great rock band just because you happen to like them.

    RockBandAide Reply:

So just because you got kicked off the forums at RockBand.com means you can rain on everyone’s parade at another Rock Band fan site? No thanks. Go be bitter somewhere else. The rest of us will be here having fun until you cheer up.

  • Epsilon says:

Neither of these songs really jump out at me as songs I was really clamoring for, but at this point I feel compelled to buy them both anyway. Knowing that the end is nigh is really reducing the threshold for purchase for me. I think I’ll be buying everything from here out unless it’s something I really particularly dislike (which is a pretty short list of songs/artists, honestly.)

  • King Arthur says:

    The shitty Toto song? Dammit.

  • ReginaldVelJohnson says:

Am I the only one super excited about these??? I flippin love Oingo Boingo (Danny Elfman’s band, btw), an that Toto song looks super fun (I’m half glad they didn’t chart all those grace notes on drums…that would have been really hard). Honestly I simply cannot complain about RB DLC. They have done such an incredible thing with all the content they’ve released over the years, and most of it is pretty great stuff. If I don’t like a song that comes out, I can always go play my THOUSANDS OF SONGS THAT I LIKE.

  • Spies says:

Boingo finally! Since its probably the only Boingo we are ever going to get in Rock Band I am really hoping Weird Science is from the album and not the single. According to Wikipedia its 6:10 vs 3:45!

    Struble Reply:

We can only dream! Until Tuesday. Then we have an answer. So yeah. Hopefully!

  • Nick says:

Not familiar with either song (both of them slightly before my time), but the preview video makes them sound pretty groovy. Might have to pick them up.

  • Wiill says:

    Not that I’m upset… I’m happily getting both…

Just… This is what they were hyping? I mean.. HMX sounded like the one song they wanted to get so badly was a theme song?

Still can’t wait to play it, though… Dunno why I thought it was Butthole Surfers – Who Was In My Room Last Night, as they have never been in a Rock Band game…

    RockBandAide Reply:

Who said they were hyping this week? And who said they’re hyping the last week. They’ve said ONE sentence about the final song, and it wasn’t even along the lines of “EVERYONE GET EXCITED FOR THE LAST SONG!!!”

    Wiill Reply:

Whoa! Calm down! It’s just what I referenced here:

    From Xanadu:
    “1) 2 songs!
    2) 2 different bands that both have never been in a rock band game as DLC or on-disc
    3) HMXPope was really trying hard to get 1 of these bands in the game

The mods on the rock band forums are claiming quality over quantity this week and a few a really excited for the song referenced in hint 3.”

Maybe I read too much into it…

    James Reply:

Pope’s a massive Hall and Oates fan, so I reckon it’s not a huge stretch of the imagination to say he wanted Toto

    Xanadu Reply:

I think you did. If the last DLC was big, they would have been hyping it. This is just the usual Thursday DLC prediction thread vague hints that get dropped. It’s best to sit back and just enjoy the last few weeks of DLC without any expectations.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Probably. The franchise is winding down. Not sure why you expect them to release their best DLC at the end.

  • wawa says:

Go look at the responses to Rock Band’s tweet if you want to see some positivity about this weeks DLC.

  • WiiDrummer says:

Don’t forget that the Aerosmith pack comes to the Wii next week also!!!

  • Xanadu says:

Weird science sounds interesting. I’m not the biggest toto fan do I’m just glad they picked any song other than Africa.

    Diaboros Yuzuha Reply:

Toto’s cover of Bodhisattva is the only Toto song the world needs, and it would have kicked ass on keys.

They just missed the mark with Weird Science. The game needs Dead Man’s Party.

    Xanadu Reply:

My first choice would have been hold the line. Rosanna is still a rockin tune.

  • Colin says:

Oingo Boingo! Yes! Would’ve preferred Dead Man’s Party, but still, a fun iconic tune. Might even pick up Rosanna if I’m in the mood for some nostalgic cheese.

  • mrgoddy says:

They didn’t chart the ghost notes, in a song with a half-time shuffle. A beat in which the ghost accents are completely crucial to the groove… Why, Harmonix. Why. I was genuinely excited too.

Awh well, still have a custom of it.

    padyo Reply:

I know what you mean. That’s one of the more famous “beats” in the history of pop drumming and its because of Porcaro’s ghost notes. What a shame.

    RockBandAide Reply:

The drum chart for Rosanna was authored without the ghost notes probably because it felt better to play than having all the ghosts in there that aren’t even heard most of the time in the full mix.

If people are looking for more authentic (read: difficult) songs, they probably weren’t hoping for a song like “Rosanna” in the first place.

    LolMunnchy Reply:

They confirmed it in the livestream last night. Having the ghost notes in the mix would have made it INCREDIBLY unfun to play and WAAAAAYYY too difficult

  • Tim says:

Where was it posted that the last week will be one song?

    Ospero Reply:

Several places, but the first confirmation was on the rockband.com forums’ “discussion about DLC ending” thread.

  • vanliemt says:

YES! Oingo Boingo! These being the final weeks of Rock Band DLC, I had given hope. So good for my soul.

  • ninjasweetheart says:

I like the idea of having Weird Science in the game, but yeah, it looks like Rock Band is ending on a whimper rather than a bang :(

    Wiill Reply:

It hasn’t ended yet. That “Bang” is expected on April 2nd.

    Ospero Reply:

Yeah, but that “bang” has been confirmed as only one song. They could give us “Stairway to Heaven”, and there’d still be people complaining about the quantity of the DLC that week.

  • chuck says:

definitely scraps from the bottom of the barrel. This sucks.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Did you expect Led Zeppelin DLC at the twilight of the franchise?

  • LolMunnchy says:

Hadn’t heard of Oingo Boingo before this, and hadn’t heard of THAT Toto song before this.

… I’ll be buying both. They sound great from the preview

  • OniRyo says:

I’m happy we’re finally getting toto, of course for toto i would’ve loved to have more toto songs on Rock Band but i’m happy with rosanne aswell.

  • GloofiE says:

I would love to see either Tool, more Radiohead, or more Smashing Pumpkins in the last week of new DLC (not counting the last day of only 1 release), but that’s just me.

*sigh* …I’ll be missing you Rock Band.

  • Deca says:

Am I the only person who was absolutely thrilled to see Rosanna? I actually just heard it for the first time in years this past week and was amazed at how good it is, it was huge in my childhood but I never fully appreciated it being as young as I was.

I actually was buzzing through the dlc list to see if it had ever been released and could not believe it when I saw it listed in upcoming tracks…spooky timing!

  • D1Matman says:

Pretty happy with these two 80s songs, given the predicament of DLC decline. Everyone is talking up “Closing Time” for the last song on April 2, how about we end this Bogus Journey with some “God Gave Rock N Roll To You II” by KISS (just a tad bit of a stretch, but heck that would be cool).

    Wiill Reply:

Never thought of that song. First time I heard it was at the end of Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey at quite the young age, and has probably had a much bigger resonating effect on me compared to most of the other songs speculated….

    NV_Spartan Reply:

OK, this would be an awesome song to end DLC with.

  • Invisible Crane says:

As excited I am for Rosanna, the one thing that bugs me about no more Rock Band DLC…no chance of uncensored versions of Stranglehold by Ted Nugent (which had “bitch” and “higher” censored) and Girls Girls Girls by Motley Crue

At least there is RBN but all RBN 99% of that is stuff I bet only 5 people will have heard of. I guess it’s better than nothing though

    HellWithoutSin Reply:

I think Motley Crue is a good candidate for the slim chance of DLC after April 2 since they own the rights to their songs and masters and could negotiate a deal more in favor of Harmonix if they wanted to.

    RockBandAide Reply:

DLC after April 2 will be RBN only, and doesn’t (technically) rely on Harmonix’s permission, so I’m not sure why their chances would be better/worse than anyone else.

    HellWithoutSin Reply:

Right, I meant regular, Harmonix authored DLC.

    RockBandAide Reply:

But there won’t be any more DLC after April 2nd. New DLC after that date would have to be something earth-shattering like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles. New Motley Crue songs (as much as I would enjoy it) wouldn’t be remotely enough.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Whether DLC was stopping or not, there would be zero chance of uncensored DLC songs on this T for Teen rated game.

    Invisible Crane Reply:

    I know that

    RockBandAide Reply:

So if you knew for 5 1/2 years that Rock Band would never feature uncensored DLC, why does Toto DLC bug you about this?

  • Colwynn says:

I love the 80′s tunes, although my own personal choices would have been “Not My Slave” by Oingo Boingo and “Africa” as others have mentioned.

As for the last song, I am hoping for “End of the Line” by the Travelling Wilburys.

    Ospero Reply:

Ooh, never thought of that one, and it would make perfect sense. (I also happen to like it a lot more than the other candidates that have been thrown out so far…)

  • ReptilianSamurai says:

Holy Crap! I was so bitterly disappointed that Rock Band would be ending weekly DLC having waited 5 years for my favorite band to make an appearance and not showing up – and now, in the final weeks, they finally got an Oingo Boingo song as DLC! Thank you Harmonix! Wish there were more (I thought there might be after Only a Lad – cover version as it was – was in Guitar Hero 80s), but I’ll take what I can get.

  • James! says:

Final week of content only one song?

I’ll guess “The End” by The Doors.

At least, I hope so. Or something similar to it. The final week of Guitar Hero DLC was just a standard pack of songs, all of which were pretty disappointing. I’d like Rock Band to go out with a bang, if only to make up for Guitar Hero limping to the graveyard.

  • MrMet2087 says:

I don’t know why everyone expected HMX to dump all these songs on us for the last 3 weeks of DLC. I hate to break it to everyone but they stopped licensing songs back in October, so these past 6 months of DLC since October has been the dumping of DLC.

    RockBandAide Reply:

Yeah, this should surprise no one. Their emptying the coffers. There may be a few cult favorites, but don’t expect any huge packs from iconic artists at this point.

    James! Reply:

Guess that explains why they’ve been stretching the DLC by releasing the Blitz songs in triplets, as opposed to the whole shebang at once like they did with Green Day and the Track Packs.

    mrmet2087 Reply:

Yeah pretty much that was the first sign for me that things were on the decline, when they were stretching Blitz. And then Aerosmith came out and everyone was like “OOHH see I told you Rock Band is safe” Aerosmith songs were licensed in July at the earliest, and back then yes everything was ok, but not necessarily when the song is released 6 months after licensing.
