  • Soundgarden – Spoonman*

So now we aren’t even getting original songs from Blitz artists any more? Bummer. I was really hoping for more Collective Soul.

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

Sadly, no. I was really hoping for a few artists to get packs as well.

    Xanadu Reply:

Same, but Collective Soul the one I’m most disappointed about not getting. I was hoping Tears for Fears and Shinedown would also get packs.

    Mircosoft93 Reply:

why do you think so? Is there any statement I’m missing?

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

Yep. They confirmed it. Blitz content every other week, and new content in between for the next few months. https://twitter.com/RockBand/status/289757037745827840

    Mircosoft93 Reply:

    meh, no Collective Soul

    gameboy673 Reply:

Well we did get Rick Springfield last week, and that pack had Jessie’s Girl. So I wouldn’t count it out quite yet. And I’m with you, I hope we get a Collective Soul pack.

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

HMX have confirmed that no new content for Blitz artists is coming.

    gameboy673 Reply:

Oh, they did? I must have missed that. And I see you linked to it in the comment above. And now I feel really stupid.

Nothing to see here, carry on.

    BobQuentok Reply:

:S I was hoping for some new Soundgarden songs

  • dlauthor says:

Guess that kills my hopes for more Living Colour before lights out.

  • Gbangr says:

at least it’s 4 of them, shame it’s not 15 odd though i didn’t think it would be. Wake me up when April arrives.

    Gbangr Reply:

so this is the 3rd release of Spoonman now too. that’s when things get silly.

    Ospero Reply:

At least HMX had a reason for it. Looking at you, Activision and your three releases of “Free Bird”…

    Gbangr Reply:

The reason being it makes them money – same reason as Activision ultimately no matter how it’s presented. Make no mistakes from here on out DLC for HMX will be about making money. If it ceases to be viable and profit margins aren;t good enough they will stop, as you’d expect. I’ll be curious to see how well Spoonman sells as a single though – not sure where i’d find that out though.

    RB Drummer Reply:

    “From here on out”?

You must have a strange sense of what constitutes a decent business plan. :)

    Ben The Wii Player Reply:

For the Wii, this is the first release of Spoonman…….

    Gbangr Reply:

It was on RB2, so no its the 2nd time for Wii.

  • KStrickTech says:

Heck yeah, pro-guitar/bass upgrades this week! These are two of the songs I wanted Pro upgrades for.

  • yankeesniper57 says:

Spoonman should be free for RB2 owners. Seriously, Dani California was free, same logic applies here.

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

Except for the fact that Dani California and Black Hole Sun were on the RB1 export, therefore HMX could just delete a line of code to block those songs off. This time, Spoonman and Give It Away weren’t included on the RB2 export. The re-releases on Blitz were a way to get them back in to the game, because they couldn’t just delete a line of code, like they did with the RB1 songs.

Another thing is that Spoonman and Give It Away are basically RB3 versions of the song (with harmonies and keys added in), not the versions from RB2. It’s not the same logic, because it’s not the same situation.

Also, the track is being released as DLC, and since there is no way for Harmonix to know who owns what when purchasing content, there is no way for them to have the track be free to a select group of people.

Basically, it’s DLC, and unless it’s a free track, you have to pay for DLC. If you don’t want to pay for a song, then don’t buy it.

  • Codewow says:

I’m starting to worry that the end of the RB store is near… I have only just purchased my pro guitar.. I will be pissed if the store ends up closing before upgrades to songs I really enjoy playing are added.

    Pood LeFache Reply:

The pro upgrades have been sporadic since the first few months (and the odd week like all of the Nirvana Nevermind songs getting upgrades, or the week where all the new Def Leppard songs had upgrades). One song a week, maybe two for a six pack. That’s it. So I wouldn’t get too mad, because that’s how it has always been.

  • xXG effortXx says:

Quit releasing these! Or i should say re-release. You didn’t do it with any other “disc games.” Quit wasting my time and give me some songs i can buy for once. No one cares about singles off Blitz, or Green Day… If the community wants ‘em they’ll buy them, not alone. This is a BAD sign if anyone else hasn’t picked up on it already. Running out of ideas?

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

I guess that Wii players, people who only wanted to cherry-pick the Blitz/Green Day setlits, or people who could only find a used copy of Green Day: Rock Band (or couldn’t find one at all) don’t count as people then.

    xXG effortXx Reply:

Well as true as that is, I always forget about them because it’s not targeted for the wii. Look, i don’t care if they do it, just don’t do it on Tuesdays. Give us more to look forward to buying. There’s SO much more ROCK they haven’t made available yet. *hint, hint* *cough, cough*

    James Reply:

So Fucking Rock by Tim Minchin?

    Sold!

    Mcmax3000 Reply:

You’ll be happy to know that there will be brand new content next week. The Blitz songs will be coming every other week until they’re all out.

  • Cleric says:

As someone who’s played RB since the first release, I can honestly say it is on it’s last legs. Blitz was a good fun game, but as far as plastic guitars go we are very near the end. Just look at pro guitar, how many people actually play and buy songs for it now? (Not that it was ever popular to due to expense). Is it possible to even buy a mustang outside of America now? The DLC of the past 12-18 months has been extremely disapointing, apart from those bands realised which happen to have fans that play Rock Band. This is expected, due to the ever decreasing amount of people that still play this game, but I can’t help but feel Harmonix is slowly letting us down from the RB universe.

    xXG effortXx Reply:

    Amen.

    yankeesniper57 Reply:

I’ve been enjoying a lot of Guitar Hero lately, many of the disc songs on those games are more fun than most of my DLC collection from Rock Band. Good songs in our minds are not released because we are not the majority crowd playing Rock Band anymore; we’ve been replaced by the ‘casual’ (drunk) crowd. Nobody who plays Rock Band for engaging music and charts finds these songs enjoyable. The only reason pop songs are made is because pop songs sell. If that’s not selling out, I don’t know what is.

    MaximusDM Reply:

I buy and play the pro upgrades. :(

    Codewow Reply:

I wll be buying and playing them once my pro guitar is delivered >.<

    Wiill Reply:

Dude.. As someone who was a drummer whom had a curious interest in guitar.. I must say–the Pro Guitar was one of my best purchases last year.

After watching A video of “The Beautiful People” played on the Pro Guitar, I thought, pfft. That’s easy. I can do simple power chords. This being back in July.

Now I’m working my way to near FCing “The End Of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage. Its an awesome feeling. I can play the frikkin guitar!

However, unless I’m playing on bass, I can’t look at the screen. So I figured it’d be easier to memorize the songs. And again, That makes those moments of seeing a guitar in someones house, I can play an actual song and its entirety.

    Me. Little drummer boy.

Sorry. Had to ramble. The excitement I originally had came back to me. You are going to love it.

    Codewow Reply:

I too am a drummer curious in guitar. I can’t wait.. I just wish their shipping prices weren’t so expensive…

    samjjones Reply:

Now you can answer the age-old question:

Who gets laid more? The lead guitarist, or the drummer?

    Wiill Reply:

We did you buy it from? I bought mine from Amazon.com, and shipping was free. It was like 55 bucks, and even came with 5 free Pro Chili Peppers songs.

  • Beckett says:

Umm yeah. No. I already paid for Spoonman, I’m not buying it again, no matter how much I may like the song. Principles matter.

    OsagaTheGreat Reply:

Have you already imported Blitz? Because if you have, then there is no need to purchase it again (or any of the Blitz songs) because it’s the same file!

    yankeesniper57 Reply:

He probably wouldn’t have bought blitz, because he’s only mentioning Spoonman, when all of them are imports.

    Beckett Reply:

I have no interest in Blitz so no, I haven’t bought it, much less imported the songs. When I said I already paid for it I was referring to my purchase of Rock Band 2.

    KEWB Reply:

It IS an RB3 Version though FWIW.

  • Tyler says:

Yeah, this is definitely the last of leg of the great Rock Band legacy. I’m guessing once they run out of Blitz DLC to re-release, they’re going to be making a very, very sad announcement

  • Pood LeFache says:

Good picks for the upgrades, though “Metal Health” would have been fun. C’est la vie.

  • Sidd says:

I feel like the game is dying. I love rock band still but rocksmith has been getting way more attention lately.

    case Reply:

Not sure if it’s patented, but Harmonix should be making a analog-to-usb adapter like Rocksmith. They said it would have too much lag, but apparently that didn’t stop Rocksmith from being more popular.

    desperadokilljoy Reply:

where? rocksmith gets no attention here just like rb.

  • D1Matman says:

I too am glad it’s 4 Blitz songs being hurried along out the door rather than 3 this week. Bring on next week and more NEW content.

  • boomsniper77 says:

I think they may be slowing down the DLC this year because they’re prepping for Rock Band 4 on next-gen. This may be the last year for the Xbox 360 & PS3 (DLC wise), so they’re going to a slow halt. When the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out, they’ll start up more DLC again.

    case Reply:

    Hopefully.

Plus they’re clearing out 4 songs instead of 3, which is kind of nice.

    Saeglopur Reply:

The chance that there will be a new Rockband game anytime soon is very very slim. Sadly the bandsimulation games are kinda dead by this point, even Rockband 3 didnt sell very well anymore. Also, there isnt much more they could add to this games. They did everything in Rockband 3. The only thing to add would be some kind of adapter that allows us to plug in any real guitar or bass to the console. But not many would buy that. So yeah, don’t get your hopes up too high.

  • D1Matman says:

Oh, and I almost forgot, it’s time for some obligatory but debatable Onomatopoeia…

    “Mooaaannn”

  • wiibaron says:

Well let me get this straight: I paid for Spoonman on RB2. Then I paid to import Spoonman into RB3, but couldn’t. Then I bought it for GH. Now they would like me to buy it again for keys and harmony that I really can’t hear on the song, so NO. Then I paid for Cult of Personality on GH3, and paid for it again on Smash Hits. Then I paid to import Cult to WoR, but can’t play it because SH import makes WoR freeze up on Wii. So NO on that one too. Don’t have Pro Guitar. so nothing missed. Kelly ain’t my speed, and I can’t stand Kevin Ds voice on his 1 hit wonder song. Start to stockpile folks, cause the end is near. Unfortunately the pickins’ are slim for the pile.

    Mcmax3000 Reply:

    1) You never paid to import Spoonman into Rock Band 3. It was never part of the RB2 export.

    2) I fail to see what having Cult of Personality on GH has to do with it being in Rock Band, but that’s your decision.

    MattyT Reply:

In addition, the GH3 version of Cult of Personality is a re-record. Prior to the Blitz release, PowerGig was the only source for the original version of Cult of Personality in guitar/band music games, to my knowledge.

  • Saeglopur says:

Why are they doing this? You have all this songs if you buy Blitz. It’s practically a big DLC pack. I mean, it’s not like they ever released the Rockband Lego song as DLC, did they? And I’m glad they didnt, because I want new songs.

    Pood LeFache Reply:

Apparently when they released “I’m Still Standing” it outsold some of the other weekly DLC as a standalone track despite being in Blitz. With recent bands like Toadies (and I bought that pack), I’m not surprised.

    MattyT Reply:

As someone else who bought Blitz, I feel the same. Harmonix mentioned in their most recent podcast that more financial resources are being focused on new games/projects at Harmonix, versus Rock Band content. Not as much resources = not as much content. Harmonix has additionally stated that NONE of the games that they are currently developing are Rock Band related.

It’s all business, and trying to develop the next big thing and revenue stream. It’s an unfortunate fact of this industry of video games. I’d even go so far as to guess that we’ll only get two new pieces of content per week by year’s end, if not earlier.

  • Jason R. says:

So a lot of people on the RB forums seem to assume that RB DLC is going to pretty much end after this Blitz release. I guess they’re jumping to that conclusion because the HMX folks aren’t doing much to dispel that line of thought. I kind of see their logic, because it’s very strange for me to see HMX re-release tracks like this over a protracted period of time [in the past, they usually just dumped a track pack in one or two week swoops]. My question is: Is it really that cost inefficient for HMX to keep releasing three songs a week for the game? I would imagine there is still a hardcore batch of people who still buy the DLC, so I would guess that would outflank the cost to license and make the songs. But that’s an assumption on my part, since I don’t know the nitty-gritty details behind the DLC process.

In any case, it’s disappointing. The DLC gravy train that HMX has cultivated since 2007 has been pretty astonishing when you think about it. Not to be hyperbolic, but it may be one of the greatest achievements in video game history. I just hope that it comes back in another form if the RB franchise moves to the next generation of systems.

    D1Matman Reply:

Even if we got drip fed one NEW quality track per week until that ever happens, it would keep a lot of people somewhat satisfied. Hope lives.

    Wiill Reply:

The fact they’re still doing it after five years is astonishing. There is no other console game that has pushed this much content on a consistent basis, every week.

Every week for five years straight. Think about that.

I can easily forgive some re-releases. Especially considering the fact they don’t even have to include pro notation to said Re-releases.

Also, these few weeks have looked nice for my wallet. All I am paying for are the Pro upgrades.

    Take my money, HMX.

    LGscoundrel Reply:

I’d honestly love to see more re-releases if it meant more stuff in my library with Pro features.

    Wiill Reply:

With RB3 content, I’m only sitting at 180-something Pro songs. It’d be nice to expand that exponentially.

Personally, I just enjoy seeing that huge number, and friends that are shocked to see that many songs to choose from.

    samjjones Reply:

They have access to the real numbers, and we’re only speculating. We don’t know what licensing, staffing, etc. costs.

But it is very possible that RB DLC is no longer a profitable endeavor for them.
