Thursday Throwback: “All Right Now” by Free

For this week’s pick, I’ve turned to one of the many bands that have only one song on the Rock Band platform. The song was their biggest hit, and is one of the more popular classic rock tracks featured as early DLC. The song I have chosen is All Right Now by Free.

Free had a very short lifespan, who existed only from 1968 to 1973. After the band split up, Paul Rodgers, Free’s main singer, formed another group you may recognize called Bad Company, who’s first single was Can’t Get Enough. The band itself didn’t do very well, until their most successful single, All Right Now, was released on their album, Fire and Water, which drove this English band into mainstream popularity. With Rodgers’ success in these two bands, he was named to #55 in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, while Free bandmate Paul Kossoff was #51 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

All Right Now is the band’s signature song, and the band’s only real hit. It has been re-released a number of times over the years, and has been remastered and remixed, which is the version that is released for Rock Band in late 2007.

1-tier guitar starts off the proceedings, with that very fun to play, but iconic riff that continues for the majority of the song, while during the chorus it changes to some sustains. 1-tier drums starts off next, which consists of your usual drum beat, with lots of foot pedal between the notes, just to keep you on your toes. Prepare for a workout in 6-tier vocals, as Rodgers has a big vocal span, so make sure you play another song first to warm your voice up before tackling this one. 0-tier bass kicks in at the chorus with its simple chart. The best part of the song is at the 2 minute mark, you get an awfully long drum fill, with an unofficial guitar solo, then an unofficial bass solo, then a proper guitar solo, with a long tambourine section throughout on vocals.

Got any ideas for any artists we haven’t featured yet? Or different songs by artists we have featured? Any ideas would be great!

Not only is this a truly classic song, but it’s a lot of fun to play in “Rock Band”. Not too complicated, but not so simple that it’s boring. Plus, who has the #1 score on it in “Rock Band Blitz” on 360? Yo.

(It’s all about the small victories, and I’ll take what I can get. So, yeah, please don’t try to top my score- let me have this one!)

Helpful info. Lucky me I found your site accidentally, and I am surprised why this twist of fate didn’t happened earlier! I bookmarked it.
