Rock Band Blitz Song Review: Part 1 (Barenaked Ladies, Foo Fighters, Queen, RHCP, Soundgarden)
While there may not have been any DLC that shows up in the Music Store this week (unless you’re on Wii), people commenting that the streak has been broken seem to be forgetting that Xbox 360 and PS3 are receiving a 25 song track pack called Rock Band Blitz. Without further ado, here’s the first batch of reviews and playthroughs for the Rock Band Blitz pack. Included below are playthrough videos of the DLC from the always awesome thenewnoelisoncruz. Definitely check out and subscribe to his YouTube channel!
One Week, These Days, and Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to..) can be purchased on the Wii for 200 Points. Xbox 360 and PS3 must purchase Rock Band Blitz for 1200 MSP ($14.99).
Barenaked Ladies – One Week
The guitar on this song is hot like wasabi! It’s mostly some quick alt-strums (with enough breaks in between to keep it from becoming too alt-strummy!) along with some notes that take you across the fretboard. It’s pretty fun because while it’s challenging, it’s not daunting.
Bass, especially when compared to the other instruments, is so uninteresting you’d think you’re looking at Aquaman. Most of the song is just short bursts of simple notes followed by a bit of space. As someone who is a dedicated bassist, I was seriously disappointed.
Like Snickers, this drum part is guaranteed to satisfy. The part switches between three, not-easy-but-not-hard, beats. One for the verse, one for the fast rap(?) section, and one for the chorus. None of these are particularly hard, but because of the changing, it’ll keep you on your toes!
Keys, for the most part, are pretty easy. There is, however, one part where, like Harrison Ford, it gets frantic. The part in question happens during the second rap(?) section. Sadly, the rest of the song isn’t that great, being that it’s mostly just sustains on keys.
Like vanilla, vocals here seem to be the finest of the flavours. If you’re attempting this on solo vocals, you’re going to run in to something like Paradise By The Dashboard Light. There just isn’t any breathing room. For that alone, this song could have received an Impossible rating on vocals. Alas, it’s only Nightmare. Harmonies, provided you have another person, are still hard, but you won’t run out of breath during the song. The really fast rap(?) section is placed on the first harmony, while the chorus is on the main vocal line.
Foo Fighters – These Days
Guitar was pretty fun. It’s mostly comprised of one riff repeated through the song. Fortunately, the riff is great to play, and it’ll take you all over your fretboard! Also nice is that it’s not TOO hard, so it’s approachable for adept players while still keeping it interesting for the more seasoned players.
There is a far amount of downtime on the bass, but fortunately, when it’s playing it’s pretty fun! Like the guitar, it takes you all over the fretboard with a riff that can be interesting to players of all skill levels!
For Wii owners, this is easily the hardest song you’ll get. I’m not the greatest drummer, but I could barely even hold a combo on this song. The trouble with this is that the bass pedal is in a different timing that it is in most songs, so that could have thrown me off. The other thing is, there are quite a few fills, and rolls just thrown in to the song. It’s pretty fun, and a good challenge for some more adept drummers.
Vocals here threw me off a bit. I don’t know why, but my guess is because I’m not all that familiar with this song (I really need to get around to listening to Wasting Light). As far as harmonies are concerned, they’re only really present during the chorus, and all they do is double up on a few phrases. Not the greatest harmony part.
Queen – Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to…)
The highlight of this guitar part is easily its two solos, but the rest of the guitar part is great too! Its got some great sections that will surely keep you on your toes throughout the whole song. I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about Queen that’s amazing for Rock Band.
Bass here is somewhat sparse, and is the weakest part of the song. With that said, it’s still pretty fun to play. It’s got some little trills (not Trill Lanes) thrown in, but mostly it’s just steady rocking on a couple of notes.
Drums maintain a steady beat throughout the whole song, but that’s not to say it’s a boring beat! It has a couple fills in it, but nothing too difficult. It’s beat is mostly Hi-Hat/Hi-Hat-Bass/Snare/Hi-Hat-Bass. It’s tricky enough for beginner drummers, but nothing overwhelming.
Keys start out with a solo that seals the deal on this song’s Nightmare difficulty. The rest of the song is some fairly easy chords that stop the song’s intro from making the part Impossible tier.
Even We Will Rock You is fun on vocals. It’s just something about Queen songs that makes them so epically amazing on almost everything. With vocals you get to sing the one and only Freddie Mercury. Despite what its Impossible rating might tell you, however, I didn’t find it all that daunting. Granted, it’s still hard, but it’s not the hardest Queen song to sing.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away
Guitar remains relatively unchanged from the Rock Band 2 version, with the only real difference being Trill Lanes in the second solo. The solos themselves aren’t that fun (remember, the first solo is great if you needed that achievement in RB2 for FCing a solo with the solo buttons!). The part itself is quite fun, and as the Harmonix guys said during the livestream, the songs were picked because they’d be fun in Blitz and fortunately, that translates well into the main game!
Coming from the one and only Flea, I was disappointed in this bass line. With RHCP songs, I expect a certain difficulty associated with the bass. Here, it was just sliding across four notes on the bass. The most interesting parts of the bass are during the solos, where you slide across the four notes, but at the end you get to play a short string of HOPOs across all the frets.
Drums here are difficult to get at first, due to its bass pedal action, but once you get in to the groove (and trust me, it’s pretty groovy!), you should do fine on this song!
Keys, or rather, Mouth Harp, is pretty easy. One could compare it to the vocal part, pretty easy and you could probably FC it, except for a couple of sections that actually require work. Here it comes in the form of slides on the keyboard toward the end.
As far as harmonies go, there aren’t any. In fact, this is the only song in the whole Blitz package that doesn’t have harmonies. The other thing this lacks, save for the last section, is pitch. Not great for vocalists who care about challenge, but really good if you need an achievement!
Soundgarden – Spoonman
Guitar is still fun to play. Hell, this song would probably be fun to play in PowerGig. Or, maybe not, but I digress. The riff consists of alt-strummed chords, going on until the chorus where it then goes into a series of HOPOs that cover every button on the guitar. Then it goes back to the chords, until a solo where it does a similar thing to the chorus, just pumped up to the extreme! It was a great gameplay experience in RB2 and it’s a great gameplay experience here!
The only time the bass ever really takes a break on this song is during the drum solo, but that’s OK, because right after the drum solo is a BASS SOLO!! While it isn’t much of a solo (after all, you are just playing the chorus riff), it’s still enjoyable to play through. The rest of the song mirrors the guitar part, almost note for note, save for a chord here and there.
Drums, as far as tiers go, is the hardest one in Blitz. This song was also a nightmare (both in tier, and gameplay) in Rock Band 2. Who’d have thought that the drum solo would be the easiest part of the song! Drummers who are looking for a challenge, who never played RB2, or just haven’t played Spoonman in so long they’ve forgotten it, should love this song!
If you were to ask me 3 years ago what event I dreaded, when playing Rock Band 2 on my Wii, I would have told you High Budget Video Shoot. This is because at the time, due to the fact that I was (and still am) a singer in real life, I was almost exclusively a vocalist. The reason I dreaded this event was because the song was Spoonman. When I went to play it in Rock Band 3, something changed. Either I’m a better singer now (which I am), or the chart is easier. I still failed out, because I forgot to put no-fail on like I do with all my reviews, but unlike my old RB2 Wii days, I (almost) made it to the end. I only had one phrase left. The harmonies on this song can also be attributed to making it easier. It now splits up the “Steal the Rhythm With Your Hand/Steal the Rhythm While You Can” style sections to be on lead and harmonies.

I’ve been waiting for Spoonman. It was probably my favorite song to drum in RB2, and when they announced pro mode for RB3 I was ecstatic to play Spoonman in pro. I was f’n *crushed* when they said it wasn’t one of the songs being brought over.
Gonna play the hell out of that tomorrow.

Nice Walter White you got for a front man there.

Exactly the same here. In fact, at the time that was confirmed, my interest level in Blitz the game was so low that playing Spoonman on Pro Drums in RB3 was going to be the number one reason I’d buy it.
Turns out that Blitz is absolutely incredible, way beyond my expectations, but it’s still going to be great to get Spoonman back in my regular drumming rotation.
My greatest Rock Band triumph of all time was passing Spoonman on expert vocals with a severely shaky arrow (on PS3, obviously) during my Bladder of Steel run on the Endless Setlist. I had 69 glitch-free songs and then the shaky arrow on the most high-pressure song of the whole ordeal. I damn near had a heart attack (due to a combination of tension and rage), but I just barely averted disaster and got my precious trophy.

Oh my God, that shaky arrow was the worst thing to ever happen to music gaming since Power Gig. OK, it wasn’t that bad, but it irritated me to no end.

As bad as that was, to me the PS3 crash bug on RB3 is worse. Especially because it may be the only bug in history where the negative impact you experience is directly proportional to the amount of money you’ve paid for the game. It would be only mildly annoying, not soul-crushingly maddening, if it weren’t for the fact that it takes about 3 or 4 minutes before I can play every time I launch the game.
If they ever track this down and fix it, I swear I’ll reward Harmonix by emptying my meager savings account and buying dozens more songs as a celebration.

Over at the Lounge, we’ve turned lemons into lemonade by taking a round of shots whenever the game crashes
PS. Does your system NOT crash if you turn off the network?
Epsilon Reply:

Yep. Not a single crash when I disconnect from PSN, in hundreds of hours. It got to the point where I just got in the habit of always turning it off. But now with RB World, I want to play connected again, and in my first session, got a crash. I did get through several hours last night without one, but it just sucks to constantly fear it.
I also never got a crash until the patch where they fixed the keyboard sound glitch. Then it started happening fairly frequently. I just hope it doesn’t happen in Blitz…I haven’t put enough time into that yet to see if it’s something in their reusable net-code that would affect that game as well.

Holy Shit! I had actually completely forgotten about the shaky arrow!
Ah, the good ‘ol days. At least we still have XMB Boots (Shots!!) to keep us busy…
What are the most interesting songs on bass on this game?

Spoonman is my personal favourite on the game, but to be fair, although I played the other songs on bass, I didn’t really concentrate on them the way I do when I do a review.
Vocals on “These Days” threw me off. Too low to hit most of the time, which was kind of frustrating. I did OK eventually though.

Agreed. That’s a song I’ve sung a million times in the car ever since Wasting Light came out. I was SURE I’d crush the vocal first time through but… not so much.

I know that feel, bro. I’ll keep practicing until I get it right!
Awesome reviews. Thank you so much!!!
Hey now, dont be ripping on Aquaman, if you think he is bland and boring or worthless then you obviously dont know much of anything about him, seriously read any of the comics, especially the new 52 version Geoff Johns writes it, and its been the most bought comic each time its released. People think the shitty Justice League cartoons portrayal of him is even remotely accurate, when its not. Same thing for the campy Batman tv series that made Batman look like a retard with down syndrome.
Was there not 25 songs in Blitz? It it imported 20 songs to RB3.

Check your previously acquired. 5 go into there, the rest go to newly acquired

If you just sort the whole list by “Date Acquired”, it’ll just put all 25 up top. I guess this is a pretty rare edge case, but that’s just what I’ve always done by habit when playing newly added songs.
Ospero Reply:

Uh…is that actually possible? As far as I can tell, sorting by Date Acquired only gives out 20 songs under “newly acquired”.
Anyway, the five songs you don’t see in the list are “A Little Less Sixteen Candles”, “Always”, “Bang Your Head”, “Cult of Personality” and “Death on Two Legs”.

We might be talking about different things. I’m not talking about using the “shortcuts” to pull up the Newly Acquired category, like you would do to select a letter for alphabetizing or something. I’m talking about hitting Select to go to the Sort/Filters screen, and setting the first option to “Date Acquired.” That just takes the whole list and sorts it in order of when you got it.
So in this case, I had all of my songs in the list, and it had the 25 RB Blitz songs at the top, followed immediately by the Foreigner songs I got a couple weeks ago, and then in reverse order of acquisition of DLC all the way down the line.
Ospero Reply:

That is exactly what I’m talking about, but that option sorts into “Newly Acquired”, “Already Acquired” and the different discs (Green Day, Lego etc.), with the first category cutting off at 20 songs. At least it’s that way on the 360; no idea whether that kind of sorting works differently elsewhere.
Sudobyte Reply:

I think this is the issue. On 360, it only goes 20 newest, older, discs, but I think PS3 actually remembers the date (admittedly I have no PS3 to chack on). No idea why, probly a limitation on how 360 tracks downloaded content or some such.
Wii I have no idea, and I’m too lazy to check.
Great reviews. And thank god for splitting up “Steal the Rhythm With Your Hand/Steal the Rhythm While You Can/Spoonman” between lead vocals and harmonies. I love the song, but as one of the main singers in our group, that part was always annoying to sing. Always.
Where is the review for The Black Keys DLC?

I’ve been wondering this for awhile. That’s the first release I can recall where RBA hasn’t at least put up videos for the releases. I’m hoping I don’t forget to at least go hit thenewnoelisoncruz’s channel and check them out at some point to see if they are worth picking up.
DOwnloaded blitz yesterday. To be honest I’ve only played 18 songs so far but as an expert drummer I was bored with a lot of the songs. Spoonman and the Queen song were probably the standout one’s. I hated the way they charted one week as they seem to not include the open hi-hat in certain section of the song. As someone who plays on a roland kit it got on my nerves a bit but overall 25 songs for 20 bucks is pretty good deal.

25 songs for 15 bucks! The deal is even better!

If you’re saying open hi-hats are specifically affected, I wonder if this is somehow related to the fact that the Pro Drums mode in RB3 maps those notes to the blue cymbal. In any case, I highly doubt they “charted” One Week in the sense that they sat down and laid out the notes for Blitz. I strongly suspect that they just charted them all for RB3 normally and then ran it through the algorithm like any other DLC.

I made the mistake of doing a marathon run of all 25 songs on Expert Pro Drums last night in alphabetical order. When I got to The Wicker Man, I was tired, but cruising through the first minute or so with a nice FC…and then the chorus came and the bass just destroyed me. In all my years playing, I’ve managed to never get a blister on my foot from drumming (I play without shoes on), but that song at that time broke that streak.
I have to say, Blitz is more fun than I expected. Its a great way to play if I’m feeling lazy about getting a guitar or setting up the drums. I like it. Its definitely worth the money.
I hope they make full pro charts available for the songs in Blitz so that there are more songs everyone can play together across the platform from two-button console controllers all the way up to the Squier.
