Thursday Throwback: Rio by Duran Duran

This week comes straight from a recently discovered band of mine, Duran Duran. An English rock band formed in 1978, Duran Duran was one of the most successful bands of 1980′s, with 14 singles in the UK Top 10 (including two No 1′s) and 21 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The success comes from having 13 studio albums featuring 39 singles. And after three decades of writing music, the band is still going strong, as they have been recently picked to perform at the London Summer Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony.
Within Rock Band however, the band is only represented with three songs on the platform. A lot of people will already know Hungry Like a Wolf, which was included on the Rock Band 2 disc. Two other songs were released as DLC shortly after the original Rock Band, Girls on Film and Rio, which is the song I’ve chosen for this week’s Thursday Throwback pick.
Rio, the title track from the album of the same name, it is the seventh single by the band. Although not achieving the same commercial success as Hungry like the Wolf, the song did break the Top 10 on the UK charts and reach No. 14 on the US Billboard charts. The song also gained a lot of attention from generous airplay of their iconic music video.
It’s quite a fun track to play, with 3-tier guitar having a simple chart, despite include some fast strumming at the half way point. Be prepared for a work out for the 4-tier drums, as after a fun fill at the beginning for the song, the majority of the song uses a lot of yellow cymbals, which eases off during the outro. The 2-tier bass is problaly the chart with the most variety, with a great chart to be played here. Being Duran Duran, expect some a good time singing the 1-tier vocals.
Got any ideas for any artists we haven’t featured yet? Or different songs by artists we have featured? Any ideas would be great!
After looking through this site, why don’t you head on over to my growing fansite, The Tribute Pages which features loads of tributes of video games, TV shows and movies. I love the bass line in this track. Fast, with a fun groove. Drums on the other hand, never been a fan of the disco-style drums.
The only problem is that the song is about twice as long as I would have liked. I’d play it a lot more at half the length.
RB can use more more Duran Duran; Planet Earth, The Reflex, New Moon On Monday, Save A Prayer, Ordinary World, even RB3 versions of the 3 songs in game for keys and harmonies. I’d be surprised if any more show up though.

Agreed. I could do with a giant smattering of Duran Duran, but I’m not holding my breath that we’ll get any more. Just gotta be glad with what we have.

Wild Boys
Drums were sooooo undercharted. Once you mastered disco beats quite fun. Epic bass chart in fun.
My recollection is that the vocals in this song are severely undertiered. But it’s been quite a while since I played it. There’s a little something for my to-do list.
IIRC, the guitar in this song is damn near unplayable during the sax break in the middle. Really knocks a few points off in my book, which is a shame…outside of RB, I love this song!
