Thursday Throwback: Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots

For this week’s pick, I’ve gone towards the very beginning of DLC history, and have another new band to the feature. Originally formed in 1986 under the moniker Mighty Joe Yong, the band more commonly known as Stone Temple Pilots released their first album in 1992 named Core, which is also their most commercially successful album. Continuing to produce albums until 2003, the band took a break for five years until 2008, where they reunited for tours and a comeback album. Originally classed as a grunge band, their music does include elements of classic rock and alternative genres over the years. The band has had an influence on younger bands of similar type, such as Linkin Park, Seether, and Evanescence, who all have covered some of STP’s songs.

The band has had eleven songs released in Rock Band. The song I have chosen will be faimilar for those of you who have been with Rock Band since the early days, Interstate Love Song. Reaching the top of the rock charts in late 1994 and replacing their previous hit, Vasoline, Interstate Love Song is considered one of their most popular songs. It’s also classified as a rock song, rather than among the alternative/grunge genre like their previous works.

The song starts with a slow moving intro, which the 1-tier guitar, 1-tier bass, and 4-tier drums starting off nice and easy to get you warmed up for the rest of the song. The great guitar riff translates into a chart with lots of chord usage, and the bass has a great mix of singular notes and sustains. The drums have a few fills, but it’s your usual drum chart, with lots of bass pedal to keep things from getting too boring. The 0-tier vocals shouldn’t cause you any problems, with a deep vocal range of singer Scott Weiland. No solos this time, but the song clocks in at around the 3:20 mark, so it should be not missed.

Got any ideas for any artists we haven’t featured yet? Or different songs by artists we have featured? Any ideas would be great!

After looking through this site, why don’t you head on over to my growing fansite, The Tribute Pages which features loads of tributes of video games, TV shows and movies. Much appreciated!

Easily one of the best songs in the game. One of the only songs that I can get 100% on everything. I was talking to a friend recently and I was saying that this song is the only song I’ve never gotten sick of. I still play it regularly and listen to the album regularly. Interstate Love Song kicks ass!

The drum chart is amazingly fun and an awesome song all-around. Great choice for a Throwback!

Probably one of my favorite songs of all time. Fun to play.

such a fun song on drums, especially on pro drums on an electronic kit with hi-hat pedal functionality! I just hope we get some more STP down the road.

Drastically overtiered on drums. Very easy FC and I suck at those. But very fun song!

We just played this on the weekend. I’ve never been a big fan of the song, but my friends like it.

Songs don’t need to be hard, as long as they have the emotion. Gotta love STP.

“Interstate Love Song” is really one of the essential Rock Band tracks. Unless you hate the song, or absolutely have to be sweating while you’re playing, there’s no reason not to get it.

Last night, I finally decided which of the STP 6-pack songs I wanted. I came out with “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart” (excellent on pretty much every part, and the reason I looked into the pack), “Big Empty” (pretty fun overall, but I mostly got it because it’s a chill tune), and “Huckleberry Crumble” (not bad overall).

It’s a very fun party song because it was super popular in the 90′s (which means for us dudes in our 30′s…it was integral to our social lives), and its a croonish vocal that anybody can do decent after a few drinks.

  • Whizzer says:

Another early, severely undertiered drum chart. You can easily hear all those double snare hits that are charted as one, just like ‘Vasoline’. Shame, but it shouldn’t ruin the fun.

I’ve thought about picking this up in the past, but never did. Perhaps I’ll change my mind this time. ‘Vasoline’ is pretty fun on drums, after all. ‘Plush’ is too slow to be fun for me.

  • Numskull says:

This would have been a much better on-disc selection than Vasoline or Plush.
