Setlist Checklist: Guitar Hero World Tour

With several years now under our belt since the release of the first few Guitar Hero titles, we now know that everything since Guitar Hero III was unfortunately a downhill slide, starting with this title. Don’t be confused, though, as any game compared to Guitar Hero III’s sales will look paltry in comparison. Guitar Hero World Tour still generated massive sales, handily eclipsing Rock Band 2′s sales, which was only released domestically and on a staggered scale across the consoles, in 2008.
Released in fall of 2008, Guitar Hero World Tour expanded upon the previous title, with Neversoft continuing their development of the franchise. The game was released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii and PC & Mac, with the porting of each handled by Activision-owned studios Budcat Creations, Vicarious Visions and independent studio Aspyr Media. The formula of this title borrowed liberally from Rock Band by adding in vocals and drums, and cemented bass as a standard chart in each song. Despite mostly positive critic reviews, many pointed out that Rock Band’s latest iteration included a layer of polish that provided a more engaging and fun experience.
The title retained the core gameplay established in previous titles, as well as inclusion of famous musicians such as Hayley Williams, Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde, Billy Corgan, Sting, Ted Nugent, and Travis Barker. However, the game wasn’t content with simply adding a few new instruments charts.
A Beginner difficulty was added to supplement the Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert levels, which allowed players to strum any note, hit any drum pad, and sing any note for successful completion on the songs’ simplified charts. Also new was the Create-A-Rocker module, that allowed players to customize both their players and their instruments, instead of just using the stock characters from previous games in the franchise. Wii players were also given the option of importing their Mii character for use in the game. The most significant addition was the inclusion of “GHTunes,” a “music studio” interface which let players create and share their own music in the game.
The peripherals for the game also had some features different from their competitor franchise. The new guitar included a “touchpad” across the neck for sliding during fast solos on “Slider Gems.” The drums literally one-upped Rock Band by including five pads and a kick pedal, improving on Rock Band’s four drum pads. The World Tour drumkit also had a MIDI input port on the back, allowing users to connect a MIDI-capable drum kit for use.
Guitar Hero World Tour came with a massive setlist of 86 songs, with no cover songs, unlike previous titles. Two of the songs (Motorhead – Overkill and The Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant) were re-records of previous studio versions. Similar to Guitar Hero III, songs were specifically written and recorded for the game’s boss battles by Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent.
The game was released just over a month after the Xbox 360 release of the second Rock Band game, and as such the two titles shared FOURTEEN songs, not including previously released Rock Band DLC:
- The Allman Brothers Band – Ramblin’ Man
- Blondie – One Way or Another
- Bon Jovi – Livin’ on a Prayer
- Dinosaur Jr. – Feel the Pain
- Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way
- Foo Fighters – Everlong
- The Guess Who – American Woman
- Jane’s Addiction – Mountain Song
- Jimmy Eat World – The Middle
- Lacuna Coil – Our Truth
- Modest Mouse – Float On
- Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye
- Smashing Pumpkins – Today
- Survivor – Eye of the Tiger
As noted in previous Setlist Checklist posts (and all future posts, as well), Rock Band 3′s setlist creation tool allows us to create, save, and share setlists, so we have included a Rock Band 3 setlist below that you can save to your profile if you would like to check out any or all of the songs! And as the holes are continually filled in by Rock Band’s weekly DLC releases, we will update this post, and keep it linked in the FAQ page above, for future reference.
The setlist for Guitar Hero World Tour contained a wider range of music than in previous titles, particularly to emphasize the new instruments added to the franchise, however critics found that the setlist contained very few standout hits, and that the inclusion of a number of foreign-language and difficult-to-recognize songs weakened the overall list. There was no segregation between main setlist songs and “bonus songs” as seen in previous titles.
Of the 84-song setlist (though ignoring the two boss battles), 44 are currently available in Rock Band, which is roughly 52%, higher than Guitar Hero III’s record previous record of 45%, making Guitar Hero World Tour have more songs featured than any Guitar Hero game covered thus far in the Setlist Checklist feature.
We’ve included the full list after the jump (it’s a LONG list)…

Guitar Hero World Tour Main Setlist for Rock Band 3
We typically include a playlist of all the songs, but the services that allow embeddable full song playlists are missing several of the tracks, probably due to copyright issues (Grooveshark, Playlist, etc). We thought about including a playlist from Amazon, but the songs are capped at 30 seconds. If you know of a full song embeddable playlist option, let us know in the comments and we’ll try to include it.

Have you contemplated linking to a Spotify setlist? I don’t know if it will have all the songs, but it certainly has a lot.
As for the setlist… I really we wish we had “L’Via Viaquez” in Rock Band. And some Tool would be nice, but highly unlikely. Definitely a few others I wouldn’t mind having either.

Thought about it, but can’t embed it here on the site. But the good news is that it looks like someone already did that: http://www.shareplaylists.com/playlist/guitar-hero-world-tour-ost.html

i had Spotify but switched to MOG as MOG seemed to have more. For example no 2112, Blood and Thunder, and other songs in Spotify.

Strange. Must have just added it. They never had the Mastodon – Leviathan album to choose and 2112 was greyed out. I literally just switched 2 weeks ago.
Still lots of reasons to play this game…

Of all the songs on there that aren’t in RB yet, Tool would definitely be fine staying where it is. They’re overrated drivel, just like Muse. Tool is for tools (yeah, I went there).

Shun the non-believer~ Shuuuuun~
my favorite part of this game was the open strum for bass. That’s easily the best thing Activision thought up themselves and I wish Harmonix had taken their own liberties with that game mechanic. It definitely made bass more interesting.

I was thinking of things that Guitar hero does that rock band doesn’t, and that one was one of the few that i could think of.!
Jake Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:10 pm
Although I agree that the open strum bass was a good innovative move from the GH side and I do find it enjoyable especially when you have some repeating open bass notes.. but I do find it awkward especially in these 2 scenarios:
- No long notes on open strum
- HO/PO are totally un-natural
and I think this is why HMX will never implement the open strum…
Nick Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:24 pm
This is spot on analysis. I’ve always thought the open bass not was intriguing, but I’m glad it was never implemented for Rock Band (at least how it was in GH). I do believe they had open sustains and HOPOs (at least from my limited experience with the demos), but it was still awkward. It just never really worked for me.
The other bit was the progressive chords, which Harmonix DID implement for keys (i haven’t tried keys-on-guitar with a song, does it still work?), but with protar working like it does, I just don’t think its worth developing for 5-key guitar.
Jake Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:34 pm
whenever you play keys with guitar.. and you have progressive chords… these will transformed to ho/po chords… which makes fingering physically very similar, if not identical.
so if you think about it; progressive chords in GH can all be implemented in RB (physically) but have to be shown and charted differently by using ho/po chords…
on the other hand.. keys do not have any ho/po… so the progressive chord was implemented, which I find much more soothing to see charted on keys.
sorry if i didn’t make it clear enough…

“Easily the best thing Activision thought up themselves”
Only they didn’t even do that. To be perfectly fair, Konami came up with the open strum guitar game mechanic around 2002 for Guitar Freaks 7th Mix.
So it was a good mechanic, only six years late to the table.
I’d only want 3 songs. Trapped Under Ice. Scream Aim Fire and Hot For Teacher are fun on every instrument.
Rock Band desperately needs some songs from “The Cult.”
Great middle-tier difficulty band. Sonic Temple album and Love Removal Machine as a single? Mhmm?
Cian Reply:

There is one song by them in the game. “She Sells Sanctuary”.
Franny Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:07 pm
Ahh, forgot all about that. They need more though… they’re one of those bands who are better than ‘just that one song everyone knows.’ There’s a lot of other bands like that too… We get their big hit and nothing else. Not that SSS is bad, mind you.
King Arthur Reply:
January 18th, 2012 at 7:09 am
Having “She Sells Sanctuary” practically means we have “Love Removal Machine” too.
One of the songs i really liked from this game was Kent’s VinterNoll2
I’d love to see that song on RBN
IMO, World Tour had the best setlist of any GH or RB game ever. It included songs from many of my favorite bands and also got me out of my hardcore classic rock phase. There wasn’t a single song on the setlist that I hated, something I can’t say for any other GH/RB game.
I hope Rock Band gets more songs from this game, specifically Sublime, Tool, Eagles, The Mars Volta and Michael Jackson.
Oh, and MOAR MUSE.
Franny Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:08 pm
I dunno, this had a handful of BIG songs and a whole lot of garbage filler. Overall a pretty bad game but that doesn’t mean a lot of the songs wouldn’t be great for Rock Band.
Taker34 Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
I wouldn’t say there are “garbage filler songs”. Some of them are really great, but I bet you’d never listen to 90% of them just because they weren’t #1 hits. I’m always happy when Harmonix manages to get some lesser-known songs, so I can enhance my knowledge.
Franny Reply:
January 16th, 2012 at 4:50 pm
You can make your snap judgments about me without knowing me, and that’s your prerogative, however false it may be. I do know myself, though, and don’t need to justify or prove my musical knowledge.
There was a lot of garbage filler, and there has been in every game since Guitar Hero 3. However, on the flipside, there have been a lot of bands I’ve gotten into because of the games, and I’m sure that’s the case for many. This particular game, however, had a lot of songs–even the ones that were ‘#1 hits’ that were still ‘meh’ choices for the artists.
Numskull Reply:

You left yourself wide open to snap judgments by using the term “garbage filler” so casually.
Prisoner of Society. Found out Guitar Hero had it and now I’m waiting for Rock Band to release it. Maybe then the song won’t be overcharted.
For Interpol’s song I believe it’s “Obstacle 1″ not just Obstacle.
Ospero Reply:

Yup. Also, the Kent song is called “VinterNoll2″.
Trapped Under Ice is probably my favourite Metallica song next to Leper Messiah. Maybe one day…
Why the hell is there no The Mars Volta in Rock Band again?
I would send all of my money to Harmonix for De-Loused in the Comatorium.

At The Drive-In is back together, and The Mars Volta is releasing new music this year, I believe. I wouldn’t completely rule out seeing some DLC from these bands sometime in the future. Listening to them will have to do for now.
I would like to see these songs in Rock Band, I had fun playing them and still put World Tour in from time to time to play them. But would love the re-charting with Harmonies and Keyboard.
Anouk – Good God
Black Label Society – Stillborn
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Hollywood Nights
Coldplay – Shiver (Why this wasn’t in the Coldplay Track pack)
The Cult – Love Removal Machine
Eagles – Hotel California (Seriously, not in Rock Band?)
Interpol – Obstacle 1
Los Lobos – La Bamba (It’s a cover, I know)
Michael Jackson – Beat It (WHY NOT!)
Muse – Assassin (Maybe coming soon)
Oasis – Some Might Say (Love this song, favorite Oasis now)
R.E.M. – The One I Love (Would be better in Rock Band, Harmonies!)
Steely Dan – Do It Again
Sublime – Santeria
Ted Nugent – Stranglehold (Awesome Song, why don’t we have Nugent in Rock Band?)
I do like Tool, but not these songs and Van Halen well, we know why they aren’t in Rock Band.

Beat It won’t be coming any time soon – Ubisoft locked down Michael Jackson’s work for their dance/vocals game.
The Eagles were one of the GH-exclusive artists that Activision trumpeted, and I’m tipping that they also had Nugent – AFAIK, no artist that has recorded a Guitar Duel for GH has appeared in RB.

Hoo boy, there are still quite a few good songs on that list that I’d love to see in RB. I’d even like to get Monsoon back (yes, I’m European) – certainly better than that horrendous Tokio Hotel song on the RB3 disc. Goodness, what happened to that band?

Dunno, I quite like Humanoid myself.
HOTEL CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!
The two games shared fourteen songs. Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger is missing from the current list of thirteen.
Also, I just noticed that the copyright notice year at the bottom of each page is out of date.
I was always grateful to GHWT for introducing me to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “Weapon of choice”.
.
When I later purchased RB and saw that song available in DLC I was so excited and hoped to see more BRMC (particularly the Baby 81 album) in RockBand. But still no sign…
Maybe this is where I start to sing “Am I only” to myself?
(no I’m not suggesting that song for DLC- way too much of a party downer. More a miserable by yourself anthem that one!)
I am the only person who liked Toy Boy and want to see it in Rock Band, I think.

There are still a bunch of songs here I’d buy as DLC. Hollywood Nights, Love Removal Machine, Hotel California, L’Via L’Viaquez, Assassin, The One I Love, Do It Again, Santeria, Hot for Teacher, and the Tool pack are the ones that jump out at me. Many of the other songs…no. I’ll be more diplomatic than Franny above and just say that this game had a LOT of filler, I think just to claim they had more tracks than RB2.
JW, Why was GH Aerosmith skipped? I know there aren’t many songs in RB, but still.

Because we haven’t done it yet.
Man I really want some Eagles, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band and Van Halen in Rock Band, some of my favorite artists and the songs they included in GH:WT were fantastic, except GH:WT was awful on drums. Would definately also love Shiver, Do It Again, Stranglehold, Beat It, La Bamba, The One I Love and Some Might Say.
Hopefully HMX can make it happen!
Would love to see 311 in rockband, one of my favorite bands. Harmonies would be cool since they have 2 vocalists.
Just out of curiosity, will GH: Smash Hits be done or will it be skipped because all the songs were previously available in Guitar Hero?
RockBandAide Reply:

We will probably be doing that, even though it’s a “Greatest Hits” game, but haven’t fully committed to it yet. It should be pretty easy to compile, though!
This was a semi decent game. It compared favorably to the original Rock Band. Problem was, it wasn’t even in the same league as Rock Band 2 which was released in the same time frame.
This game, as well as subsequent GH games, have a ton of songs I wish were in the Rock Band series. I’ll continue to patiently wait…

Totally agree. I bought GH:WT later when it was cheap, and only played enough to get through a third of the songs because of the outdated game play. Sad because there were lots of good songs. But compared to rockband it was just unbearable to play.
I’m the only person whose favorite song on this disc is “Aggro” by The Enemy.

You may be, but if you like it, you like it.
Nothing wrong with that.
As much as I absolutely LOVE the band TOOL, their appearance in GHWT was such a fucking waste. Schism and Vicarious were not that fun mainly due to having super long stretches of very boring gameplay.
The only one of those I’d like to see in Rock Band would be Parabola because it’s one of the very few recent TOOL songs that has some standard rock song structure to it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love their experimental, long songs, but they just aren’t fun to play.
Then again, I’d literally give up my left nut to get Eulogy in Rock Band. That and H. Toss in some Forty Six & 2 and we’re golden.
Non-GHWT related, but when the hell are we going to get some A Perfect Circle in Rock Band anyways?? Jesus. Frickin POWER GIG has an APC song and Rock Band doesn’t? What kind of bullshit is that?
