Thursday Throwback: “Tie Your Mother Down” by Queen

Queen is one of those bands is almost universally enjoyed. Even if someone says they don’t like them, they can’t deny the fact they are one of the greatest and most popular British bands ever. Because of this, and because of the two Queen packs released last December, I thought I would look back at one of the Queen songs that was not upgraded with Rock Band 3 features.
“Tie Your Mother Down,” selected as this week’s Thursday Throwback selection, is from the album “A Day to the Races,” and has been recently remastered. The album version has a one-minute instrumental intro featuring a Shepard tone melody, which is actually a reprise of the ending of the song “Teo Torriatte,” which is the last track of the album. “Tie Your Mother Down” is the first track of the album, so it makes the album like a circle.
The track, as you can expect from Queen, is very fun to play. The main note chart for guitar can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get used to it, and along with a few fun filled solos, makes an enjoyable experience. The drums have quite a unique chart, which doesn’t seem to happen very often in Rock Band (the only other song I can think of that is like this is “Don’t Stop“ by Fleetwood Mac). With frequent breaks off the usual chart with symbol hits (similar to “Gimme Shelter“), it’s quite a good drum song, too. Bass is very much like guitar, which may be a little repetitive in places, but the note chart changes quite often, so it’s good to play. Vocals are your standard Queen vocals and very enjoyable!
Unfortunately, there is no easy full band gameplay video for me to grab on YouTube, so the playthrough videos are broken up slightly.

Also, I just want to mention that I apologize for not having fulfilled any requests yet. I haven’t had the time to buy some new tracks and play them, but I will get around to it!

Holy shit, I love Queen so much. Upgrade controversy be damned, the Queen upgrade week last December was quite possibly the single greatest week of RB DLC ever. Every song was amazing, and every song had pro guitar support. I want the last four Queen songs to get upgraded so I can delete the old pack entirely. Plus, you know, lots more new Queen songs would be great.

One of my favorite Queen songs. Good pick!
I can see why this wasn’t along the first batch of Queen RB3 releases. If there are keys, they’re hardly audible.
Though it’s a fun song, it seems to thrive on simplicity of one riff/beat. I only picked up the RB3 versions of Queen and I’m not getting this one now. Perhaps with another RB3 pack with all four remaining songs plus a few new ones.
“cymbal hits.”
not “symbol”.
I love this song, and it’s the only song that I’m #1 on the guitar leaderboard too. so that’s chill.
